Ek9 Top Speed

I don't get it, I thought speedos are supposed to be accurate if its stock. Are people just saying its inaccurate when its nearing the top speed or something? If not isn't it a problem when it comes to speed cameras?

Car dials can be innacurate, it's quite common, you're best bet is to measure your speed on on a sat nav or something similar. It's probably one of the reasons speed camera have a give of 2-3 mph usually to account for inaccurate speedo's!

It depends largely on your rolling diameter. Changing the size of your wheels, tyres etc is always going to throw both your odometer and speedo off slightly!

In my case, stock EJ8 wheels are 14" (i think), and I was using 17" with 215/45 tyres.....when I used my sat nav the speed was way off....around 90mph speedo was about 81mph on the sat nav.

I'm now using 16" with 205/45 tyres and 90mph on the speedo is about 84mph....

Lower down though, 30mph on the speedo is more or less 30mph on the sat nav, so I think it only really matters as the speed builds up!

Can't use my tomtom then as it is super inacurate and lags behind lol, unless it is actually telling the truth and my speedo is telling a lie!! Damn times like this you wish you could test out your speed with someone holding a speed gun in a safe environment.

my b18c ek9 hits the limiter in 5th so how fast am i actually going?
i have 195-50-15 sized tyres :nice:

hi,

i have an ek4 wit 55k on it , has minor mods , open air filter , axle back exhaust , sparks, ht leads , full engine flush, and i have had 135mph gps on an expensive indago . my speedo was reading 140 - 142mph. so definitely capable of that speed , just can't understand why you're ek9 won't pull past 130mph . and yes it did take a while to get there but it still got there.

I have a ek9 and ive had over 140mph out of. On a slight motoway downhill though.

hey why not joined your ek9 to WRC and let see how it match up, with the evo, subaru, cetroen, et al

tbh after the limiter in 4th (about 125 iirc) the EK9 does run out of puff a little, once in vtec in 5th will take a bit of time to reach the limiter, not a good idea at all on the public roads :)

my ej9 has done 125 in 4th @ about 6k revs, still had a bit to play with to, i find if i put it into 5th it runs out of steam,
yea it took a while to get there but ive found that since taking my subwoofers out the boot, and keepin unnessecary shite out the car, i can get a 65 in 2nd, 90/95 in 3rd, then 125 is all i had in 4th with a bit left to rev!
dont know if it will go faster!

all of that was done on a private test track of course!! lol

What size wheels and tyres do you have?

195/50/15

Assuming the EJ9 is the 1.4, I find 125mph from 1400cc highly unlikely. The book speed on the VTi is 129mph. You must mean a speedo indicated 125mph, more like 105-110 GPS.

my car has only ever been de-restriced once when running a spoon ECU on the B16B and i hit 143MPH(speedo) and was climbing pretty well. I backed off though.

I own a 96 jdm spec ek4 SiR and it has a limiter at 130mph tho 120mph can be achieved at redline in 4th so...? 10mph in 5th lol but quik nuf and 5th wil pull straight2 130 like 4th tho after it wud slow down i reakon! she is so dam quik of line tho in wet is amazin has s4c lsd box!! had a 106 quiksilver 1360cc had 125mph on m4 toll lol but only ever had 105mph in 4th so... different gearin but slightly spectical:shocked:

iv had my ek4b18c to go around the clock past were it says civic type r

(has ek9 gauges)

what speed in kph is this

5th @ 7200plus rpm on 4.785 box

As long as the cars have stock wheel/tyre sizes, standard gearing & stock-ish (breathing mods) engines then the Vmax will be very similar to what is stated as the book figures...End of.

Drag increases to the square of speed-I.E If speed is doubled (x2), drag is multiplied (x4), therefore it can be seen that a significant change to engine power is required to really alter top speed (if the gearing allows for it)

FORGET the Speedo reading, they will be ~10mph+ over-reading at them kind of speeds. Rev counters are also a bit innaccurate IMO- ITR revs to 9k on the gauge but the limiter is 8400 in reality for example:secret:

My ITR will pull just over 150mph on the Speedo (tested on a private runway thanks to my job!), & this equates to 143-144mph on the Road Angel (with built in GPS)..close enough to the book spec

I should imagine an EK9 has a pretty similar Vmax ....maybe slightly less due to the 200cc it gives away to the ITR. Also areodynamics will certainly play their part with accelaration at the top end too. I suspect the ITR may be slightly superior in that respect too going on shape alone...

In any case, Top speed figures are all Pub B.S IMO. Anyone who thinks a couple of bolt-on mods can add 10-15MPH top speed is dreaming. Perhaps some of these lightly modded cars ARE slightly faster than the stated figures, however I bet they take forever to get there:shocked::p

Well, I can hit 225km/h (140) on the counter in Germany with my EG5 (125hp D16z6 with decat, catback and CAI) while the number should be 190 (119). When I put my cat back on this decreases with 10km/h. And at 200km/h (125) I have a deviation of 12km/h (7.5).

I had an ek4 and yes accordingto the speedo it said it was doing up near 140mph but it took a long time to get there...Now with my ek9 I hit the limiter at about 130mph..Basically just before the red R on the type r cluster..If it was derestricted it most deffinalty would keep going..And I did this on the same road as the ek4 and I had hit 130mph in just over half the lenght it took to 140mph in the ek4..And still the ek9 felt it was going faster even thou the gauges said different

I bumped up this thread and now its grown quite a bit !
My almost stock civic b16a hits 140mph on the speedo, with more revs and plenty of power to go.

It also outdrag's a good driver with a clio 197 cup from 40-100+mph.

Mods :
desmond regamaster lightweight wheels ( made a huge difference ), however aren't really aero friendly.
skunk2 header
full decat buddyclub zorst
slipping clutch
not tuned
Have lowered the front to give the car a nice rake angle, seems to be helping the aero side of things.

People on civiclife are calling me a bullshiter that an em1 will beat a cup 197.

Perhaps i should make a video of the engine hitting the limiter in 5th on my longer ratio box and 205/50/15 tyres which will be approx 155mph + Now that might take a while to get to ;) - I doubt id hit 155 though to be honest haha
