K20A - A few home truths.

He didnt say about the rotating but I wouldnt know to ask! I expect Tom to check the plugs tomorrow mate.

Compression/leak ok, cylinders ok, plugs ok, oil pressure ok, both vtec solenoids replaced, amongst other things checked.

Disconnected the exhaust, this seemed to make some difference, need to run it on the RR tomorrow with it disconnected to eliminate it. Seems to think there is discolouration on one area, possibly a blockage.

Just drove home with the system disconnected, road conditions and traffic not ideal but definately more urgency about it, sounds like a touring car, hope to be on the rolling road in the morning.
IF it is the exhaust I need a track friendly 65mm system, custom would be best but would prefer a jap setup...

alan at solid-fab could knock you up a good exhaust, he built one for a k20 eg with a large middle silencer and a jap style rear can, plus did my downpipe which is a work of art. Should have gone there for a custom manifold from the start, its cheaper than buying brand new branded parts and you know its gonna fit

Didnt really fancy Solid Fabs work. Its easy to say what I should have done from the start, there has been plenty of 'what if' for me during the build, too late now to do things different. The issue I had with Simpsons was just one of many problems trying to get what I wanted, its not all documented in this thread.
Looking like I will take a trip to Charlie at Prospeed if I go custom, his other contracts for me were first class.
All the Jap systems are mostly 60.5 and £££, the ones that are not are just too loud.

Problem found :nice:

The DC sports mani's flexible pipe expanded inside created a 25mm restriction...no wonder why the car was struggling to breath :p

We'll get the car dyno'ed again next week with a new flexible pipe

Romain@Eurospec

So the missing ponies have been mostly hiding in the exhaust manifold, the flexi section looks fine on the outside but inside it has collapsed, the car is breathing through a 25mm hole :nerv:. My backbox has also had it.
Apparently Paul at TDI has had a few in recently with the same flexi problem on the DC Sports manifold. Mine has only been on for a few months, pretty poor.
So after checking out Romains system and a chat to Solid Fabs who can fit me in pronto, I am reasured, car will have a solid section to replace the flexi and a new 2.5" full system, remap next week.

What a week of drama

That sucks dude :( On the other hand, at least you dont need to take apart your whole engine.

sorry the hear about the car mate :( i hope it is all fixed soon, at least it is not a major problem.

Amazing what a restriction in exhaust flow can have on power output. Did Romain log the air/fuel ratio's when you first brought it to him after power drop? should have noticed super rich air/fuel ratio's with a restriction like that.
Doesn't say much for those DC Sports mani's:angry2: What diameter catback did you have on it before as going 2.5" now?

I always log the AFR on a dyno run, especially when the car comes in for a diagnostic ;)
If the air don't go out, it cannot go in so it won't be massively richer as the manifold atmospheric pressure will drop as well, its a bit more complicated than restriction=richer. It was running richer at some point and leaner on others as we can see on the last graph

To reply to another post on the last page, the Kpro has a built in knock sensor which works most of the time quite well but for certain type of header/intake and for most of the headwork, it won't be sufficient enough as you can't change his sensivity.

It will read knock even if it doesnt occurs
When it does it actually doesnt pull the timing out so you'll have to be carefull if you are on the limit, which to be honest, you rarely are with all the breathing mods and a good working K20A2 !

Glad you found the problem anyway and I'll see you next week for hopefully a bit more power with the new exhaust ;)

Romain

Aonghus, I had the Legalis R system which is 60mm, looking forward to the return of my horses!

Power! Maybe another 5bhp Romain and more torques?! :naughty:

Yeah the 2.5" should see you a few more bhp up top:naughty: A lot of guys are actually using 3" exhaust's on the k20 with good results. Romain will see you right:nice:
Let us know how it goes.

Took the car to Solid Fab today, new 2.5" system is on, Alan had two back boxes to choose from, I chose the more free flowing.
I will post up a pic of the flexi shortly, I will have to go back to Solid, the section just before the flexi on the DC Sports is only 2", what a joke, so basically it has narrow runners leading to 2", which now leads on to a 2.5" system, going to get him to build me a manifold. At the same time change the back box for the quieter of the two he had.

At low revs and the first three gears is pretty noisy, above 3.5k its great, no drone on the motorway, but at the moment probably not trackday friendly! So to sum up the whole thing still is not sorted and it just seems to be dragging on, going to have to wait until after xmas now. Alans quality of workmanship is very good now I see it first hand.
