K20A - A few home truths.

Took the car to Solid Fab today, new 2.5" system is on, Alan had two back boxes to choose from, I chose the more free flowing.
I will post up a pic of the flexi shortly, I will have to go back to Solid, the section just before the flexi on the DC Sports is only 2", what a joke, so basically it has narrow runners leading to 2", which now leads on to a 2.5" system, going to get him to build me a manifold. At the same time change the back box for the quieter of the two he had.

At low revs and the first three gears is pretty noisy, above 3.5k its great, no drone on the motorway, but at the moment probably not trackday friendly! So to sum up the whole thing still is not sorted and it just seems to be dragging on, going to have to wait until after xmas now. Alans quality of workmanship is very good now I see it first hand.

You'll get there in the end Chris:nice: I'd avoid going flat out till you get back to Romain for a remap as the fuelling requirements might have changed a substantial amount now with you freeing up the exhaust

Yeh eventually mate, Romain did mention it, I have only had some short bursts as I got out of London, from Brixton to the A3 I hardly hit 3rd gear.

Pics, not the best quality..

Holy **** makes me want to change my manifold now.after seeing that. Amazing what you find out from other peoples misfortunes

Just seems to be one thing after another with this build, I am determined to get there though.

:wow: that's crazy how closed in its become

Get it changed:p:D

wow, no wonder the car was struggling!!!! Chin up though dude as it will be worth it when youve got the right system on there!

Glad you got to the bottom of it Chris!

Also nice to see how determined you are with your build despite many setbacks and misfortune with the K swap :)

Progress at last, car is back from its second trip to Solid Fabrications, custom manifold is done, its a very nice looking unit, Wasnt sure if I would have just a placebo effect but it is definately better, the car is much smoother. Alan has taken away the kink that was on the DC header and used bigger runners with a different style. Pics to come later.

Car is running rich and the engine light pops on if I get carried away, RBC package and a remap to come from the Frenchman later this week, should be good :drive:

What a great read, if my employers knew i had just spent nearing an hour reading this thread this morning they would not be happy! Very informative, my mate (si vti) has a DC5 K20 in his EJ9, Hasnt had any running issues whatsoever,
Guess hes just lucky, most of his swap parts were Hybrid but not sure what header he was running!?
I have to admit, after being in a K-swapped EK its very hard not to want one, not so much for the power (even tho its awesome its achievable from a B series) But the 6speed box is awesome, I can't imagine how good it is with a shorter 5th and 6th, Can imagine it being a great engine on track with the NA responsiveness & 6 speed box

My Mates car has a Base map on it from a Nippon series DC5 iirc ? but it pulls very well & He has had no reliability issues at all so far, hopefully once your niggles are sorted you will have the same problem free ride!

Im 95% sure my engine will be replaced with a b18c & Close box but im getting more and more tempted to save up loads and go K !

Cant wait to see some videos of this in action.!!! :drive:

Thanks, I have had plenty of drama, but yes the box is a real gem, 6th gear acceleration on the motorway is perfect along with up through the gears. I do have something leaking underneath, spotted while on the ramp at Solid.
Trackdays were very few last year, hoping this year will be better, plenty of footage to come!

Very reasonable prices if you want one knocked up to your own requirements. Excuse the quality, some were taken with my camera phone..

Looks like a good job on manifold. Looking forward to seeing new dyno results should make a nice difference to power:nice:

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but you said you were afraid of a placebo effect, what exactly is this? Googled it but came up with some very strange results

Fantasic build, havint had the please of driving a k20ek

Sometimes you install a mod on your car and think you can feel the difference but really there is none, placebo effect.

In medical trials sometimes they give people something telling them its something which it isnt so as the results are conclusive, another explanation.

So more drama, as I thought my RBC does not fit, not enough room between it and the rad/fan, just a remap then...

Cancel that, Romain has worked his magic, RBC is on, mapping in progress..
