As per the title, this isn't going to be one of the most epic, no expense spared builds you'll see. I'm entering my car in the 2012 VTEC Challenge but the plan is to be cost effective and enjoing myself in doing so rather than racking up a debt to chase glory. :D

My member's car thread is here to give more detail but in short the car is an EK4 with a B18C6 with some breathing mods, coilovers and a bolt in rollcage.

The biggest bit of work to get the car ready is replacing the rollcage for a weld-in job. Unfortunately the OMP bolt-in looked unlikely to get past the scrutineers as some of the tubing is 40mm diameter and 2mm thick whereas the MSA stipulates that the minimum is 45x2.5mm or 50x2mm. Also there is a slight second bend in the front legs which are not allowed. Further more, with the increased chances of having a shunt in racing, compared to trackdays, it made sense to have a more robust cage.

Not much progress to show thus far, as the car is currently having the new cage built. But....

Stripping the dash back to make it easier for the cage to go in and give me a better chance at getting to some of the now defunct wiring and make it easier when fitting the cut-off and extinguisher pull.

Towing is a bit of a no-go with my circumstances (company car which is a little too light and weedy for the job and don't have the right letters on my driving licence) so the car will be driven to and from the races, and obviously still used on the road for the odd jaunt :drive: hence the blower and heater matrix are staying.

Good work, and all the best with the racing

Building something similar myself

Will be good to see them progress

Looking good James, certainly nothing 'budget' when it comes to getting it ready though! :nice:

will be following this closely , well in :)

That's the truth. Getting your licence is a killer, so much money and all you get to show for it is a card and a copy of the blue book.
The cage is going to cost me but I've done a bit of bargain hunting elsewhere. My helmet (hedtec rapido) was a £109 brand new, £100 for the extunguisher, I got a 2010 momo rookie suit for £125 and I've managed to get hold of a pair of Piloti LMP boots for £36. Other than the tyres I've pretty much bought everything now, just a matter of putting it all together.

Look's very promising mate! I wanted to run mine in the vtc aswell, maybe in a year or so I will once I've settled down from training I will get around to it.

All the best mate, Will be following this thread/build for sure! :nice:

Nice, looks more like my kind of project, will be following this! :D

Some tidy savings there. I think new drivers can run any tyre for first two rounds, if you have any left from last year, may run my V70's if I can't stretch a new set. Cheeser tells me tyres must have 1.6mm tread left at the end of the race.

very cool mate

at the end of the day it is going to go on track and get battered anyway so doesnt have to look like a showcar

door bars are now in and eye bolt backing plates welded into the footplates.

When you come to look at the brakes (standard replacements or upgraded) drop me a PM and I'll sort out a deal for you in exchange for some advertising :)

This looks nice !!!! Where did you get your cage from mate ??!!

Thank you mate, I might well do that. My front discs are pretty much toast so I'll probably give you a shout soon.
