Spoon EK9 Hi Comp B18C Track Car

Good choice on the wheels my friend!! EBC yellows on the front? That suprises me. I never really rated them as a pad for track, but you do have bigger calipers i suppose. I have read fantastic reviews for the ebc bluestuff ndx pad, cheaper than ferodo ds2500 too. Thats what i am trying next on the barge.

You need a decent header on that if you want to see a major power increase. Your tuner may want to tweek the cam gears a bit to. A good tri y will do the trick if ground clearence isnt a problem.

Sounds like you guys had fun anyway ! Who was asleep in that picture with someones ass behind them lol ?

Is that trip something you plan to do every year ? I might have to come along next year.

It was me that was asleep

Was feeling the affects of many many hours of travelling + a long day tearing around the ring :blabla:

Ha ha ha... Poor you Steven... It happen's to the best of us mate !

Well on stock calipers they were only good when HOT. With the Spoon i find them great, good bite last well and don't attack the discs like crazy and they are cheap. My only gripe is brake dust but imo if you want a performance pad they will all kick up dust like more power means less fuel per gallon. If you get me. If i can lock my semi slicks on track then i don't need anymore power from the brakes. The pads have lasted 4 trips to the ring and still have 2-3mm left with mixed road use aswell.

Don't think i'll get much out of cam gear tweaks i'm running very close P2V. I understand the header thing but i already clip my manifold now, i will flatten a hytech or smsp. :(

ian do you think you could have the same amount of fun if it was 40bhp less?

I don't mean to put a downer on your build, but NA build is expensive for the gain...(i remember we talked and i said to you go turbo LOL)

you think you could have gone for something RWD (s2000) if you are doing track work?

i'm just interested in what your opinion is

It cost me £8500 in total nit Inc exhaust and retune. I would say unless you have a unhealthy b series leave it alone. The car is great to try but it just feels normal again after you get used to the extra power. And living with a hi comp as a daily can be a right royal pain in the arse. Lucky I don't use mine daily. It's a track and show car for me.
:eek2: lot of money spent. Did you not consider going down the K swap route Ian? Can't help but think it would have been far better value for money... 200+whp is easy to push out of those with some bolt on's and kpro ecu, perfectly fine as a daily drive also.

How is the hi comp difficult to live with Ian?

If you are locking up, surely a change of brake setup or braking style is needed?

Thought about raising the ride height? Sure Hytech etc could build to your spec? An N/A build is never cheap especially with a full refresh of all parts.

my spoon setup locked up everywhere at the ring last year, however it was spot on at knockhill, i had to run aggressive pads to get the fade resistance i needed for such a small track but then on the wide open Nurburgring they were too on and off - if you're planning on keeping the spoons i would look at different pad / disc choices as with the brembo's this year you know how good they were yet i only locked them up i think once on track when slowing down for a yellow flag....!!!!

if you were looking for a serious header, the SMSP street sweeper is a great header. proven amazing gains and due to the collector placement in front of the block it is just the down pipe running under the engine so has immense clearance - pretty sure it sits higher than the lowest point of the sump!!

I never did this build originally just to make power. I had 3mm of valve end play and would burn a litre of oil every 4 laps on the ring. Simply not acceptable for me to continue. I have driven turbo'd cars and they do NOTHING for me. Maybe supercharger but i like N/A. I love my EK9 not S2000 and i want to continue tweaking and modifiying my EK9. I've owned it for 3 years now and still love it to pieces.

Absolutely not, i don't like K series engines. Yes i could have done a swap but i now have a BRAND new engine, all new seals, bearings, rods pistons valvle train etc etc etc

This cost for the build included a number of things such as

Gearbox build,
Final drive
Mugen Diff

theres £1500

ECU and Harness

Another £500

Oil cooler
Gauges

Another £500

Water blast and laquer block and gearbox

Another few hunderd

Also consider that i insisted on

Brand new water pump oil pump etc etc etc everything is brand new apart from the crank valves rockers block and head. All other components a fresh and hopefully reliable.

This build as not intended to chase numbers just build a new, reliable engine and hopefully make some power out of it at the same time.

Is that £8500 just on the engine build?

See above

The thing that annoyes me most about the high compression is the risk of knock and ensuring you have the best fuel grade.

I don't want it any higher than it is, if anything i want it lower but i'm not going any lower.

As for brakes i'm sure most of it is where the bumps are and elevation changes but i don't feel a need for a better pad or setup. I'm very happy with stopping power.

I looked at that. Looks impressive... But a further grand for a header plus another remap £500 for what 5? 10? maybe 15bhp? :nono:

Will see if your opinion on brakes remains the same after you have done a few tight uk tracks. :drive:

You coming up coombe friday? Bring your helmet and you can pas with me if ya want.

Was under the impression engine alone cost the 8500. Yeah I can see where all those bits would add up:nice:

Can you add a bit more detail and pics to your build thread mate, took no time at all to read through it.....
Your cars acceleration, cornering and braking is awesome. I liked it a lot.... so much so im going to buy one.
