My B18C-R EK9 review

The head is identical on B16B and B18CR, cams etc are all the same dude.

no. The cams on the EK9 and at least the 2001 USDM ITRs have 3 degrees longer duration.

The difference is slight but it's worth noting. But with that said, don't expect 5whp across the entire rev range from such a small change. Cam gears on the "regular R cams" would likely unlock more power.

Jimbob........... Fair play mate, fair play

I went out tonight on a proper run.

My friend has a REV 3 MR2 turbo with exhaust, around 250BHP. Very fast car.

Before with B16B he used to pull an edge in 1st and 2nd, then 3rd and 4th he used to rip past me. Literally blowing me away.

Now with B18CR its literally neck in neck from 1st gear to 130MPH!!!!

Its Soooo much faster its hard to grasp. I didnt realize it was quite that much faster until tonight.

Whoever hasnt got a B18CR, NEEDS ONE!

wow that sounds good, my mate has a 310bhp rev 3 mr2 and that thing has some SERIOUS power, i would love to see how your car pulls man

I dont think I would enjoy the linear power band. Owning the ek9 is all about that aggressive change over, etc that the B16B gives you and I would miss it. My j's intake and Tanabe SMR makes it sound awesome. I'm putting a spoon mani and custom de-cat on next week and it should sound even better!:nice:

I'm thinking more along the lines of keeping my B16B, mfactory gears, more weight reduction (I already have the race base model and its stripped) and hondata Will tune:bow:

So do what others have done with their 16Bs in the states.

1) Accept that the motor doesn't produce torque and mask that deficiency with gearing.

2) Augment its inherent frantic nature with cams that produce power from VTEC to 9000rpm and beyond.

Don't be afraid to try something different. 18C is definitely nice - but the above combo is also very fun to drive.

Cool thanks for the Info mr Angel! I am looking into gearing from you guys at the moment so hopefully get that sorted soon. Going to get them from dmrr in ireland, were perfect last time I dealt with them!:nice:

I'll have to get mine weighed to see. Might be different to what I imagine.

You do realise that you wont have a higher torque reading like you state below?

Torque cant be geussed like the Fly horse readings.

The torque reading you have of 125lb/ft is the torque reading, regardless of Wheel or Fly readings.

Hmm, is that so. If this is true I didn't realize. Anyhow that was a guideline, figures are just a bit of fun for a rough guidline.

So what your saying is the B18CR out of the 98 spec JDM DC2 has different cams to the B16B? Is this a fact?

I was under the impression the heads were exactly the same. Only differences are what Jugbugs stated...............

The 96 spec JDM DC2 has 3 degrees less duration than the EK9. Everything else is the same. The 98 spec JDM DC2 head and internals including the cams are identical to the EK9

So i was right in what i first said?

The engine in question is my engine which is a 98 spec B18CR

thanks.

A genuine 310BHP MR2 turbo with proper driver, that would be conciderably faster then a B18CR EK9 with bolt ons.... My mates one is a stock Rev 3 and its dead even i'd say right till the end of 4th gear(120MPH) then 5th gear he has a bit more i reackon due to their very good aerodynamics....

Even in stock form the MR2 rev 3 is a seriously fast car so to be even with that in a pretty stock 1.8litre N/A till such a high speed is amazing. These hondas are weapons when modded right.

Your only in reading, if there is ever a meet or anything i'd gladly show you :)

Yeah i totally agree man. there not the best handling but on the straights there killer. His best mate has a 106 gti with a genuine 160bhp and it kills the 2 in corners then the mr2 just reels him in on straights its a really funny sight!

sweet man will you be coming to the basingstoke meet on the 5th??
ill be there in my ssb ej9

oh yeah on the corners he just completely gives up as he openly admits there isnt a point trying to keep up LOL.

I havent actually checked out that meet, i'll have a look in the meet section. But that sounds good! I'll let ya know dude :nice:

lol, he knows if he drives to go to fast round a bend he will end up sideways lol

ok sweet man

Personally I don't think a 9 would win round the corners provided the MR2 is driven by someone experienced and who knows exactly how to handle an MR2. The MR2 has more grip but the problem is that when it's ass goes you die :p So to keep it on the edge of grip is probably much easier with the 9, but on a track driven by someone who knows the car, I wouldnt bet on the 9 tbh ;)

I beg to differ my friend. They are well handling in the right hands on the right set up but dont compare to the 9 IMO.

same, i only got a ej9 and when i hit the same roundabout as he did in the 2 i felt mine was good compared, so i could only imagine what a ek9 could do round it

if that makes sense

Well, guess this would be a "i think" and "i believe" discussion, since there aren't any results on the MR2 vs EK9 :p Would be interesting though to see what happens.

At the last North Weald airfield day the two MR2 turbos destroyed all the cars on the handling circuits, inc mine & Babyface, admittedly 300hp ish, I left early so not sure if Ricky managed to pull some back! No B18's in sight but the circuits were short tight & technical so the actual power wasnt so much of an advantage imo, they handled extreemly well. Wasnt a fan of their stick on bodykits, lighting or antics in the pub carpark at lunch though :p

And it doesnt surprise me. Fundamentally the car is like a car is suppose to be for the best handling: RWD and mid engined. And Toyota also got the knowledge in house to make good cars :) I would never want to own an SW20 though, cause I like to put my car to the max and that's a dangerous thing to do with an SW20.

i was referring to both stock cars by the way.

Also around a track driver ability plays the biggest part. The actual cars capability is only a small part of getting around a track quickly.
