My B18C-R EK9 review

ive been in iwhitemans car last w.end (yes after hed had the crash) and all i can say is the b18 is so much better the powers much more easly accessable altho i do like the fun that can be had with the b16b i would love to stick a b18 in my ek9 for sure however its money + i need a new clutch and owe money :( pooo!!!

Nice one Dan.

Definately my next mod after sorting the brakes and pads.

No worries gee,

let us know how you get on. I know you love some power judging by your last car, and you will love the B18C EK9.

after having a shot in a b18c ek9 and a b16b ek9 i can definatly say if i done the swap i would miss the revy b16b.
But on the other hand a b18 ek9 is a very quick car and the torque is so much better.

cheers zubzub for the shot mate

I was the same the first day of driving it around. But after you drive it for a few more days continuosly and have it up against a few fast cars and your beating there arse the B16B starts to soon become a very distant memory, oh so quickly lol.

Overtaking an Astra VXR at 120MPH feels dam good lol :nice:

thanks buddy :)

Yes, very happy with he car at the moment.

No probs mate.

I agree with what u say about the missing the revy feel tho, i loved wen it hit vtec in the b16b.

But the b18c does shift tho :nice:

:bow:nice ride bro..are you modified the engine mount to fix that engine??what your top speed ??

They weigh about the same, same engine, similar chassis.. will be nothing in it imo.

EK9 is 50KG lighter.

mine is even lighter as i have semi stripped and i have mods....

I can tell you for free a stock DC2 would get mullered by my car in current state.

Tuned up DC2 with weight reduction would be better race.

im driving a b18c swap on my ek3 three days now and im amazed with the torgue !!
the car pulls like crazy !
if you got the money the best thing you can tune on ek9 !
:bow:b18cR

Nice figures Dan! I am still undecided whether to go down the B18C route, I could go get it done tomorrow as my mate has a fully rebuilt B18C sitting in his garage. I just dont know! :( I was also in zubzubs and the torque was good low down but I would defo miss the B16B vtec crossover, etc!!

cheers for the shot also zubzub! :)

hi mate

Can i ask how much power ZubZubs is running? Is he also running the B18CR?

I know what you mean about the cross over point, but you still get very good kick when vtec kicks in the B18CR. Gained 40WHP from 5500RPM-6500RPM.... My vtec kicks in at 5500RPM....

Just cross over is more linear and smooth. But to be honest i prefer that sort of delivery where the gear feel like one complete gear. The B16B almost has 2 sections of power. A pretty flat point from 1K-6100RPM, then a very hard kick right to the redline......

The B18CR you get a proper surge of power at 4000RPM. The fun starts much lower in the revs compared to the B16B and just gets better the more revs you go....

They do feel so different, but you really need to have your wicked way with it, in your own time to really appricate it.

At the end of the day, it is preference, and i love both engines. I do see your point as i was like that even when i was driving it for the day... but after driving it more and more, it just gets better and you really appriciate the new engine.

Hi mate, sorry not sure how much power zubzub's is running. Yea he has a
B18CR with the teg box (4.7FD) so I reckon it would be 200bhp as his ek9 is totally stock. Still has B16B airbox, etc. Not sure what ecu or loom he is running tho???

Yea the change over is more linear but the power low down was impressive. vtec at 5500rpm would be good, you got an aftermarket ecu?
I dont think I would enjoy the linear power band. Owning the ek9 is all about that aggressive change over, etc that the B16B gives you and I would miss it. My j's intake and Tanabe SMR makes it sound awesome. I'm putting a spoon mani and custom de-cat on next week and it should sound even better!:nice:

How would the B18CR be with the B16B cams?? never actually thot how that would be! might be an idea:secret:

I'm thinking more along the lines of keeping my B16B, mfactory gears, more weight reduction (I already have the race base model and its stripped) and hondata Will tune:bow:

AAAARRGHHH I just dont know!lol :D

The head is identical on B16B and B18CR, cams etc are all the same dude.

The thing is the B18CR will always be more powerful like for like. And the mods make more of a difference on B18 as it has more displacment to use the mod better.....

The b18CR is a B16B just with a longer stroke and higher compression. They are both just as rev happy just the B18CR has alot more power all the way through. Which at the end of the day is what most of us want, more power/speed/potential.

Ahh i duno, whatever makes ya happy i guess. I couldnt look back now though...

Im running the 98 teg ecu and the ek9 wiring loom with harness, my car is totally stock, so i guess its just the normal power u get from the teg, if the teg engine had that sudden cross over to vtec like the b16b then this would be the my dream setup, but i can live without it :nice:

And Rambo not a hassle taking you out mate, anytime (just mind my mussels lol) :nice:

You do realise that you wont have a higher torque reading like you state below?

Torque cant be geussed like the Fly horse readings.

The torque reading you have of 125lb/ft is the torque reading, regardless of Wheel or Fly readings.

Got it Dynod today and made 176WHP and 125lbs These figures are AT THE WHEELS

So Fly power maybe something like 205BHP/ 145-150lbs...

along those lines...........

It depends on the model.

EK9 ranges between 1050kgs-1099kg
jdm DC2R is around 1070kgs

You only have a 1050kgs ek9 if youve removed stuff like SRS, ABS, AIR CON, Recaros replaced by stock civic seats. Most of our street EK9 is 1090kgs.
JDM DC2R same spec is 1080kgs.

Theres nothing in it! :nice:

Although DC2R in UK may be heavier as the US model definitely is, since it wasn't sold as a 'HONDA' but 'ACURA'. Acura models have more weight because of more standard options included.

Our AUDM models are 1087kgs. Which is same as EK9 1090kgs. ;)

B16B is a destroked B18C. In other words a Skinny version of the Buff B18C. The only difference is;

-TB
-Crank
-Rods
-Pistons

I dont know what everyone's blabbing about the B16b revving nicer?! B18C revs much harder and faster. Give both motors 9000rpm, and the B18C still revs much harder, smoother and nicer.

Give both motors 9000rpm, and the B18C still revs much harder, smoother and nicer.

It might rev faster due to the fact it's got more displacement....but rod stroke ratio plays a factor here in how smooth and nice it feels at 9000rpm.

in the 16A/16B it feels effortless, but in the 18C it feels positively manic. This is not to say the 18C feels like it's going to fly apart, but it sure doesn't feel as smooth and nice as the smaller 1.6L variant.
