I found this on another forum and thought i would share it with you guys...(sorry if it has been posted before)

2011 changes to MOT « Wrecks2Riches, UK Salvage, and Damaged repairable cars

HID lights – Specifically those aftermarket kits that give the very bright headlight beams. Any cars found with these kits will be an automatic MOT failure. Testers are able to easily spot the difference between HID kits, and manufacturer fitted Xenon’s. Easy to spot as Xenon cars have suspension level sensors, in car beam adjuster, and usually headlight washers.
Chipped ECU’s - Unsure of just how/if this one will realistically be enforced, but any cars with chipped ECU’s will in theory be an MOT failure. I can only assume VOSA have found an easy way of checking ECU software through the cars OBD port (diagnostic plug).
Wiring harness – The general condition of he wiring harness will be checked to make sure there is no rubbing or chaffing, and that the harnesses are in generally good condition. If unsecure, or damaged again MOT failure.
Airbag warning lights - If any warning lights are illuminated, it will again be an MOT failure.

what a joke wont be long till its just completely standard cars that pass mots lol cheers for the info m8

Airbag warning lights are a bit harsh
Chipped ECU's are a bit harsh (maybe talking about the eGay chips and not a proper tune) - although cant see how they can tell.

I'm not a fan of HID's but i'm sure a lot of people will be upset bout that one.

Everything else seems fair !

haha god sake, thank god i still have mot testing mates :naughty:

Just read through the DVLA document

Didn't see anything about HID's (only mentions headlamp bulb & unit compatibility.

They say testers already look at the wiring harness (or should be).

They do not know how they are going to go about testing for 'illegal engine chipping' yet (whats illegal about it?).

They are going to be failing for warning lights on dash

The dates are as follows for the changes only state that they should be in place by 1st Jan 2012 and they want it to be common EU practise by 2014.

cheers for clearing it up barryl i have hids was starting to get worried there haha

Dont know how they will be able to differentiate between the strandard PO3 ecu in my car and the Chipped P28 without opening it up and checking the board aha.

Airbag warning lights - Already an MOT fail aren't they?

HIDs - Good, they are ****ing annoying when properly installed from the factory, let alone cheap retro fitted tat fitted by pikeys.

Engine chipping - Sorry, this sounds like utter bollocks, plus our cars don't have an OBD port so they can't check anyway.

Although the document does not specifically mention HID retrofit kits it's the general consensus on forums I've seen this posted already that the clause relating to headlamp bulb and unit compatability has it covered. Based on HID bulbs being designed to cast through a projector unit rather than halogens which use the reflector style set up.

top one has projectors bottom doesnt. i like my hids though so wont remove them haha.

SRS light isnt really a silly failure. If your airbag light is on, this means that your passenger airbag will not go off either.

But its probably not illegal to remove the SRS system or airbags so why fail a car on something you can legally remove?

Its not an MOT failure if your reverse lights arent showing which i find quite wierd as i'd say it would be safer for cars to have showing reverse lights for other road users than a SRS light on your dash.

Touche haha. Aye who knows man, can pass with an aftermarket steering wheel obv, just light cant be on.

Who knows where they come up with this gear? Prob the same people that decide you have to declare a different rocker cover :nerv:

Ha ha aye - Got to declare stickers too

What also gets me is anyone handy with a screwdriver can remove whatever bulbs they want from the dash so there is no consistency in the new tests. Which is what i though an MOT was about.

Infact technically the bulb could fail rendering the entirity of the test completely useless as their could be a fault present but since the test only relies on a bulb to show it.

just looks like another bout of usueless speculation and scaremongering to me,,

I wish you were right but theres an official DVLA document with some info on changes / proposed changes

I hope it ends up that you are right though and that the changes arent implemented

Airbags, fair enough they could save your life one day - but either way they can do some serious damage to you like broken ribs/punctured lung's ect.

Also seen someone with their wedding ring in their eye, as they braced for impact raising their hands, also seen a fractured skull because of someones bling bling watch almost punched a whole in the skull lol
