PICTURE REQUEST: Vented / louveres EK bonnetts

I know you're asking about bonnets, but have you thought of other ways to evacuate air from inside the engine bay other than a vented bonnet?

I did some testing on my race car and found that temps and air flow were much better through vented guards than through a vented bonnet. To get a real benefit from using a vented bonnet you'd need to have the vent as far back towards the winscreen as possible, and the vent would need to be quite deep (ie. not subtle).

The air flows so nicely through my engine bay (even with a front splitter) that I found grease from the cv boot that split on the track on the opposite side door. Strange but true.

If you must have a bonnet though, going for one that is not so subtle with quite a large slope on the front will give you better suction than a "subtle" one, and therefore work better. The one on the facelift EK9 (not the C-West bonnet) above is a good example, and would work well in getting hot air out from in front of the engine. Although the C-West bonnet looks nice, the venting is a joke.

*edit* You could always just space the bonnet 5mm at the back, thats free, and works better than any vented bonnet! Ugly as sin though!

IIRC I read somewhere , where people tested it and had no effect on engine bay temps.

I'd agree with this, I'm considering options as to how to get the underbonnet temps down for an ITB setup, there's going to be some serious heatsoak in there as standard! Raising the back would seem to be the most straightforward option, I'll be doing some tests with a wired thermometer soon to see how much of a difference it makes.

The way to do it! When I tested my bonnet spacing I found it made a difference, but the vented guards made more of a difference so we went down that road. You have to bin all your inner guards though, but some don't want to remove their inner guards for road use.

Er, dunno what you'd call them over there? Vented Front Fenders?

Front wings? If that's what you mean then yes, removing the inners is out of the question really.

Wow, wings!?! Learn something new every day. :)

The other way to do it would be something like the Beatrush under tray. That has a louvred bottom that is designed to extract air from the engine bay. Don't know how they work though, impossible to get them here in New Zealand.

Things like those under trays are not designed out of thin air though (they are tested rigorously), so I would expect it to work just fine ;)

Do still have that bonnet, was keeping it to put on Pauls, been sat in the shed for months, but now its my car and i want it standard it will be up for sale.

I will be selling this soon. I would like to do some kind of PX if you are interested.

Thats not actually an EK9 bonnet mate, its for an R34 Skyline. Only knew the design from an old wallpaper I used to have on my desktop. Absolutely love it though.

Not actually sure if you can get a bonnet with that kind of vent for an EK9 bar getting a custom one made. I just wanted to post it as a possible idea.

make sure you check out what laws apply to you before changing you bonnet. i know where i am that carbon bonnets will void all insurance as they are consided a defect

livvy you are insane that is probably one of if not the nicest type r ive EVER seen and you broke it.i feel sick

dude,

exterior only has

bonnet
bonnet pins
vented wings
wheels.

Looks very very nice but its not far from OEM and not hard at all to make a stock one looking like that.

If it was a fully modified body of some sort and broke it then fair enough but thats pretty much like braking a stock one bar a few subtle mods......
