HOW TO: make your tailights come on like EK9 ones

Right, since i saw there`s a big interest in how to make your ek4`s,ej9`s etc taillights come on like the ek9`s i thought i`d just go on ahead and make a "how to" since its so easy to do.

First i had to remove half the plastic covers for the lights to come out easier and faster. take off the screws shown in my pictures and proceed to the four 8mm bolts of the taillights. Be sure not to over tight when putting them back in place.

In my country (and probably rest of Europe) the left taillight includes the fog light. Since i wanted to keep my fog light i used a bipolar socket (and bulb of course) and used one line as the course light that comes on with the lights at night, and the other line to light up when i use my fog lights. I tapped the course light wire (RED/BLACK), the fog light wire (RED/YELLOW) and of course ground (BLACK). Some people that might want to make their lights go on with the brake pedal can simply tap the brake light wire (GREEN/WHITE) instead of the fog light wire.
For the right taillight a little modifying is required since i had to drill the hole for the extra socket. I used a cone shaped tip with a drill, then i used the same socket i`d use later on as a guide to make the openings for it to plug in. I used for that a flat tip screwdriver and tried to match its tip with the little pieces of plastic that stand out of the socket, then heat it up with a lighter and melt the plastic. With a knife i removed the plastic chips for the socket to fit more easy. For this light i used a single pole socket since i haven`t connected my brake light to the left light. Again if you have connected your brake light instead of your fog light on the left use a bipolar socket and tap on both wires coming from the brake light bulb.

Hope you like and this helps.

UK Civics only light up at top. And has rear fog light in right side lower rear light.

Bear in mind for UK drivers to keep the fog light, as it's an MOT requirement.

thats like God saying "I never noticed I put two eyes on a human being" :D
Only kidding!

It's just that you know everything about civics so when you dont know something, its a big surprise :D

Nice write up.
I did the same thing to my ek4 some years ago.

Ah by the way not only ek4 light up like that, i had a jdm (right to left hand conversion) before the ek4, it was a ek3, jdm Vti (d15b), and it did light up like that too.

hard to tell what to do by your pic
pic No12 shows clearly what to connect and where. I tapped the course light wire (RED/BLACK), the fog light wire (RED/YELLOW) and of course ground (BLACK). That way i kept my fog light.if you click twice on the picture you`ll see clearly what is connected and where.

You got everything right. I found an extra taillight wiring and used the brake light socket (which is bipolar opposed to signal lights and back up light so they won`t do). One line is used as a course light for night and the other line is my fog light.
