EK9 Airbox Mod

Hi folks,

I'm looking to improve the intake on my car. Money isn't really an issue although I don't want to spend more than I need to for the sake of it.

I have considered both long and short arm intakes but I was thinking that doing the 'airbox mod' will surely give very similar gains to a short arm intake?

I have been put off the long arm intakes a bit as since buying the car the '9 has been subjected to all sorts of snow and extreme rain etc. and I keep reading scare stories about hydrolock...

My question about the modification is:

What is a resonator and will removing it have any negative effects?
Do I need to replace the filter on the car and if so what kind is most appropriate for daily use?
Can the above be ordered online or bought in Halfords or similar and how much roughly?
From what I understand I will need a 76mm 45 degree piece of pipe, are there materials or specific properties I should be looking for in this pipe to prevent heat soak etc?
Where should I look for the pipe?
Once the resonator is removed do I need to add anything onto the bottom of the airbox to improve the air supply, like use pipe to get the mouth closer to the bumper?

What sort of differences can I expect with this modification? I was leaning towards short arm to improve lower end performance as I do a fair amount of town driving which may become a bit more fun!

For the record the engine is currently stock bar a Tanabe cat back exhaust, unsure of the pipe diameter as it was on the car when I got it!

I also have considered a carbon air box like the Mugen or ITG items, these are very expensive though. Are these noticeably better than other options?

Hope that fits the new question criteria!

Cheers guys!

Hi mate, ive not got all the info, but I cant see removing the resonator will have any down sides. It will let it breathe a bit easier while giving a nice induction noise and lose weight, you will be surprised how big it is. I wouldnt worry about Hydrolock, you would have to be driving through a couple feet of water for that to happen, and you can buy a add on that does prevent that if you really need to.

It depends on what you want, and everyone will have different ideas. Ive read in a few books that the stock airbox breathes very well and can actually give better performance than aftermarket cold air intakes. What I would do IMO is remove the resonator and add a Spoon/HKS/Mugen etc panel filter, and maybe add a pipe to direct some cold air to it, but I dont think you would get any more power by fitting a CAI to be honest, and it does keep the car quite nice looking in the engine bay due to keeping it stock. Thats down to preference though.

So you could get good improvements, and also being the cheapest option at the same time. Hope this helps a bit.

I have an AEM Air bypass valve for sale that you fit to your intake to prevent Hydrolock. PM me if your interested :nice:

Have you seen the spoon "direct airflow pipe" basically a over priced carbon elbow thats easy to replicate :)

I made one out of Alu .....

DirectFlow2.jpg

(as u can see it uses all the OEM rubbers and it literally just a Angled tube... )

Then made another out of a gruppeM replica Carbon fibre intake my mate had we made a longer version.... just becuase it was carbon fibre!

This with a spoon panel filter didnt really give it any gains, just a slighly better throttle response :), as goes for most intakes tbh.... All depends what else is done to the engine to how much increase you get from an airbox / intake mod

yes ive got a new brace and new suspension since the last elbow :D woop!

From what ive heard DC2 airbox is the best OEM mod to do, I mite look into getting one as they have a bigger filter surface area :)

Ive never ever understood that Spoon elbow, and the price they have the front to charge for it, just dont get it. Whats it meant to do anyway, other than be made of a different material and look different. Is it something to do with smoothing the airflow out?
Whatever it does, really doesnt justify the price, and especially if you can make one the way you did.

It's smoother than a ribbled pipe. But the pipe should cost more around 20 bucks and not the 69000000 dollar it costs now. Oh wait, it's Spoon, let's add 200 dollar extra...

I think your right JT, I like Spoon, but on some things I think they just take the piss. I cant really see it making any noticeable difference. I dont think 'you get what you pay for' is correct on this one!

Every Spoon item you pay a lot for the brand name, no matter how good it is.

you need a 3" 45 degree elbow and chop it to suit, details are in haitches thread above

Best mod is to remove it and fit a DC2 oem airbox with hefty cold air feed to the inner wing :woot:

can I modify my OEM B16B airbox like you and others have done to your DC2 airbox?? I want to know what I can do to my B16B airbox as I want to put it back on instead of the J's Intake?:nice:

To fit a DC2 airbox, you remove the EK9 one completely and fit the DC2 one including the rubber hose that goes tot he throttle body, simple!

thanks Steven, but folk want like £100 for a DC2 airbox! its crazy! I see Iain still has his B16B airbox on and just wanted to customise mine like his if possible please?

I'm confused as to where the cold air feed goes into the airbox? the side or bottom and do I have to cut a hole? I've bought the metal piping from Merlin motorsport instead of spending alot on the spoon elbow and I've got some nice carbon film to cover the metal pipin in and cold air ducting/piping to use! :) And I already had an HKS panel filter to use so I think I have all the right bits!

Sorry am being so stupid Steven!lol :(

It's been mentioned above how to remove the supper resonator, can either DIY it or buy a spoon direct flow pipe, tegiwa now make replicas of this item too........

The cold air feed everyone refers to is to replace the standard lower resonator

On the underside of your airbox there is a hard pipe that runs down and under the chassis leg to the inner wing area behind the front bumper, here it feeds off a large white box (the resonator) and then comes back up into the engine bay, the fluted tube you see to the left of your airbox

Rip out all this resonator and plastic below your airbox and fit suitably sized ducting to feed air from where the resonator box was

Perfect thank you very much!! :win::))

I sold my DC2 airbox for like £40 man :/

wish I could find the same, I have been looking everywhere and they are well over priced! :( I dont think they are that much diff to the B16B airbox so I will just stick with it I think! cheers:))

DC2 airbox is a better deisgn definately

It is basically a cone filter enclosed in a sealed box, once you add a big air feed to the underside you basically have a DIY mugen intake but at a fraction of the price

My airbox and airfeed will be for sale but not till later in the year once I change to Jenveys :nerv:
