Bad idea to cut springs?

i cant understand how people think its unsafe.

The spring cant go anywhere! if it dislocated from the spring seat it will work its way back in eventually, no Bigggie!

Exactly! I'm not quite sure what people are scared of here, lowering springs are all shorter than standard, do they come flying off the car?

When I had my polo down at its lowest, I had the helper springs out and when you jacked the car up you could move the spring up and down with about 2inches of room and didnt have any problems. Its all just a load of hype, as soon as the weights back down they seat nicely again.

It's up to you, we used to cut two coils, install springs and check the gap, if we wanted to go lower we would cut an additional coil and reinstall to check again, continue process until happy with ride height, make sure to cut in same location as oem cut, make sure to cut bump stops in half, remember this can decrease shock life and if your shocks are old they may not last much longer at all. Ride quality will be harsher like how coilovers are. OEM spring removal should only be done by those experienced with such a thing as there is a lot of load on the spring and make sure the spring shock is located on the floor horizontal and aimed at wall or a grassy hill as it WILL launch forwards or backwards. It is best to wrap the spring/shock with 2 large towels like a burrito to keep them from flying apart. Use caution, use common sense, if you are not comfortable doing this have someone help you who has done this before. Best of luck :nice:

there is nothing dangerous about cutting springs, people who say the spring can fall out are idiots as there is nowhere for the spring to go. i have done it to several of my cars in the past and used the cars for years without any problems and they passed the mot every time. so long as it is cut in the right place it fits exactly the same as the standard item. so long as you repaint the end of the spring an insurance inspector will never know.
all springs are cut from a large coil to start with so there is no danger of weakening the spring either

Cheers blinx! I don't have any tools so will be getting the mechanics to do it. I'll probably get ripped off again but don't have a choice really :(

Why, is someone holding a gun to your head, threatening to pop you unless your bumper is scraping the ground? :angry2:

lol, ehhh, this is not the sort of thing you pay someone to do, if your going to shell out cash then buy some drop springs while your at it and do it the right way... Be cheap or don't be cheap, you can't be halfway cheap that just dosn't make sense...

No quality mechanic would ever cut coils off the springs for a customer!!! Too much liability involved if you go out and get killed. If he is willing to do it, then I would never even let him check my tire pressure cause he's a F'ing asshat!!

Now why must you go ahead and cut these coils right away? You will have a lousy ride and unless you take it in for alignment you stand to have some serious issues with suspension components and possibly blowing out your factory struts.

I just don't understand anyone with a vehicle such as yours doing something so very half assed to such well engineered vehicle.
We do not get the Type R in America and many of us would give up our wives or girlfriends for one and you just don't even seem to care that you own one!!! JJJEEEEZZZZ!!!! :(

not being funny but there's good reason you don't get them in america. These cars are designed to go round corners fast something that doesn't exist in america, hence why american cars still use leaf spring suspension.

Actually the roads of America are some of the best roads for racing in the entire world!!! Trust me, I know, but will never admit to it!

The problem is with the average American driver! In something like a Type R they would be hitting 9krpms in 3rd gear with a one liter bottle of Pepsi in one hand and a cell phone in the other. We import Ferrari, Lambo's, etc.etc.. and the average age for a buyer in that class would be in the mid forties to early fifties. It's just that the average age for someone in America buying a Type R would be about twenty four. The young people in this country are not nearly mature enough for that much power. They would kill themselves and our government knows it!! Damned Government Bureaucracy in this country!!

That is possibly the most ignorant thing i have ever heard on this forum, you sir are retarded. Have you heard of Laguna Seca by any chance? Maybe seen it in Gran Turismo or on television? That's in USA pal and that's just one of MANY race tracks, so before you go spewing bullshit why don't you think before you type.

Forums are amazing things, they allow you to proof read yourself, to make sure you don't sound like a complete moron, but somehow people like you just type and click "submit reply".

But lets see here, race tracks? Here you go sir by the numbers:

Lets see here, list of tracks in JAPAN:

List of tracks in USA,
oh dear we do have just a tad more...

A

Caesar's Palace (NV)

We also have a little thing called American Le Mans series, in 2004 JGTC came to USA for an allstar race, what do you think they raced on grass? We have race tracks you jackass, a lot more than most major countries including Japan. We also did receive the Integra Type-R, the main reason we didn't receive the Civic Type R is due to US safety regulations and bumper laws. Honda themselves own private race tracks in USA. Remember this is just a small portion of the race tracks we have!

Now please do me a favor and for just a moment shut the **** up, and think about what you just said, take a moment and really really think before you respond because so far you really managed to make yourself look like a jackass.

And I'm really sorry if im freaking out here but i simply can't stand when ignorant people make comments about a Country they in reality have most likely never been to, and have very little knowledge on. Your comments honestly came off as nationalistic and prejudice two things i have zero tolerance for.

Your an idiot too, you think they would kill themselves with 185bhp but we sell Dodge Charger SRT8 with ~420bhp that any teenagers parents will buy for them if they can afford it.

I honestly think the two of you have brought more retardation to this forum than i have ever seen, are you guys Hearing yourselves? We have 1 jackass who thinks America doesn't have race tracks or twisty roads and another jackass who thinks American drivers aren't skilled or responsible enough to handle a sub 200 horsepower car, this is amazing, really amazing... I piss 200 horsepower, the reality is the EK9 would get raped by MANY cars in the US as the ITR did, nobody on the streets pulls up to an ITR and feels even remotely intimidated. You think our Government will let us have 300bhp STI, 300bhp EVO, 300+bhp Supra and RX7, but oh no the 185hp civic is simply too much, people are going to die

i wasn't trying to offend people it's just an opinion. At no point did i make a personal attack on americans as a whole and at no point did i refer to race tracks, i was talking about normal roads for daily driving. I think your slightly over reacting to the comments made. What does more tracks prove? america is over 50 times bigger than jappan!

Dude i've got to change the springs because the Eibachs are getting sent back to america so they can be tested for faults and so I can get a refund on em!

I have no experience in fitting springs and don't have the tools either. The cutting part is simple enough.

Taking this kind of hard aren't you blinx?
Must be one of those kids I was talking about in the previous post.

So just stick some stock ones back on then? Why the need to cut them?

As for the 'no twisty roads in America' crap, I have been in PA just outside of Pittsburgh for the past month and I can tell you this is certainly not the case, some of the roads I have driven on here are far far better than any roads I have driven in the UK, it's just a shame I have an athsmatic autospastic Toyota hire car to 'enjoy' them in.

Seriously, they are smooth and twist and wind through the mountains and forests beautifully. Right now, there is still snow on the ground but the sun is shining and it feels like a warm spring day, it is awesome. :win:

You said: "These cars are designed to go round corners fast something that doesn't exist in america" and also said that was the reason we did not have the EK9, admit it, your completely wrong, we have a plethora of such roads both public (streets) and private (race tracks). And your comment about leafsprings was also very ignorant, they are not as inferior as you think as the Corvette Z06 has leaf springs and a base model Corvette (non z06) can keep up with a Ferrari 430 on any twisty road which was proven by one of the major automotive magazines, iirc it was Road&Track.

Kid? i am certain i have been doing this little Honda thing since before you had a drivers license, this is just a side thing for me bro...

Would you like to compare cars? I promise i will embarrass the **** out of you and you will only be left feeling further inferior, lets see how half ass i do things, here is one of my cars:

Glenniz I just saw pics of ur car, lackluster to say the least... are those Chinese coilovers I see on you car? And you have the nerve to try and give suspension advice?

If anybody is wondering why I'm being so rude it's because I'm Hoping these two will be so offended they will leave the forum, call me a Nazi but I just don't think they fit in here, I am actually trying my hardest to be the biggest a$$hole possible, unfortunately I don't ban people for being stupid...
