Bad idea to cut springs?

just ****ing cutem! used to do this all the time, this is easily one of the most overhyped things, so many people say its bad or don't do it blah blah blah, your car will be fine, i cut my swift springs and they cost $320! Just make sure to cut them vertically in the same location of the OEM cut so that it sits the shock the same way it used to...

Guys back in the day there was only a couple spring options, if you wanted to be slammed you had no choice but to cut 4+ coils off your oem springs, even show cars had cut springs back then lol, no problems, just cut your bump stops in half too so you have a bit of extra shock travel.

Awesooome thanks for the info! Not too sure if i should or shouldn't do it now. If I do cut them it would only be short term!

4 coils  quite a nice drop to be honest

This was the car on cut standard springs

Looks awesome bud! Any advice if i do decide to cut them? They springs give roughly a 35mm drop so how much would I cut off for like a 50mm drop? Or how much would I cut off so theres no arch gap? Won't be doing this myself btw will be getting a mechanic to do it.

I would cut 2 coils off the springs you have man, as Blinx says, there is bugger all wrong with cutting them as long as you do them in the correct place!

I Dont have any experience of back in the day but i have "being poor and wanting a decked car" experience

the springs are cut from a large coils anyway...so i don't see problem cutting it.

Now I can't decide whether to cut my old springs which lower by 35mm already and put my standard ej/ek shocks back on until I buy some coilovers, or cut my Eibach sportlines and fit these with the ek9 shocks.

Also, is there anyone around manchester with some experience willing to cut the springs and fit em for me? :D I'll pay monies ofcourse! Just don't trust the mechanics around here after what i've seen! They also rip me off everytime.

lol.....i use to do it back in the day ride quality sucks ass after you do it...just save up some money and by some lowering spring...hope this helps...also don't heat the springs either..

did you cut your bump stops? my car rode great! no worse than any lowering spring id say...

Regardless of whether it's a good idea/safe etc, you'll get ribbed nicely by the insurance inspector if you crash it. I'm not sure insurance companies take to kindly to people taking hacksaws to their suspension...

I have to say i hate cut springs, imho the cars feel like sh*te, crashing over bumps and potholes, being bouncy as hell too. but hay if you want form over function go for it! but i'd save for coilovers before cutting springs.

Run em the way they are, save up for adjustable coilovers, then sell the eibach's on ebay!

...nope i just think i cut off 1/2 extra coil more than i was suppose to:angry2:..I've had friends do it and say nothing bad at all maybe it was just me...lol

Surprised how many people think this is a good idea. I know it all comes down to personal opinion but personally I would never sit any car I own on cut springs never mind my 9. At the end of the day its not right and not how its meant to be. As soon as you jack the car up the spring will be loose in the shock (Depending on how many coils you cut obviously) and then may not relocate correctly.

Certainly wont pass an M.O.T (Unless you know someone) as VOSA state the spring must be complete and pretty sure any legit M.O.T tester will fail a spring rattling round in a shock when the cars in the air.

Totally upto you bud but I would leave these springs how they are, save up for coilovers and then sell these after :)

Thats how a lot of lowering springs are, thats how skunk2 coilovers and GC coilovers are, no big deal, 99% of you people saying you say its bad have either never done it, or don't know how to do it, it's somewhat of a savage art, you have to do it properly, it is just as safe as running drop springs and will ride about the same. ANYtime you lower your car it will start to get bumpy and harsh, that is normaly, bouncy is the shocks fault, not the spring.

Let's see here:
cut springs: free
coilovers: $1000+

I would rather have cut springs on a decent shock than these cheap chinese coilovers like d2 and the likes...

lol......very true blinx9900...just save up some money and buy drop springs and new shocks...it a lesson learned

Some very good points here. Like I mentioned I will definitely be buying some coilovers in a few months. Going through a dispute at the moment with the Eibachs so hopefully should be getting a refund on those. For now i'll be fitting my old lowering springs back on (lower by 35mm) with my ek9 shocks. I'll probably cut like 1 or 2 coils max, quite interested to see how it rides :nerv: As for form>function, i'll be concentrating more on the function in the summer when I hopefully do the engine swap, thats when I will actually start building the car properly. I wouldn't say cutting the springs is completely for form, my old springs were poop anyway so i'm actually interested to see how it will drive.

i cant understand how people think its unsafe.

The spring cant go anywhere! if it dislocated from the spring seat it will work its way back in eventually, no Bigggie!

Good point, never really thought about this. Thanks for the input!
