yO guys.

Ive been toying with the idea of turbo'ing my 9 for ages, but due to other commitments, plans to do this have always been put on the back burner.

But recently I have been thinking more towards doing a b18c swop instead as insuring an ek9 turbo is pretty damn impossible for me at the moment.

So I just wanted some opinions from people who have gone b18c i.e. ijwhiteman, gee, ek9dan etc if you think the b18c swop was a worth while mod compared to how the car performed with a b16b?

Thanks:nice:

Not a single regret since I got the b18 in mine apart from not getting it done sooner

Cheers for the quick response dude.
Not to turn this into another b16b v b18c debate, but some members in previous threads Ive read through, claim they much prefer the power delivery of the b16b, and were not too much into the b18c. So just got me thinking really.
But I guess everyone to their own at the end of the day:cool:

Hi mate,

Not one tiny single regret. Please believe me when i say the power delivery is so similar just more powerful. There is nothing to miss unless you like slower cars. The B18 has much more lower down grunt and much more power higher up also. So you get the exact same sensation as the B16B just more. It really is a no brainer dude. And you get alot more power, not just a bit. Enough to blow cars you couldnt even beat with your B16B.

I would laugh my head off if someone done a B18CR conversion and regretted it. Brings the EK9 to life! Even though the Chassis could handle even alot more and still retain grip.

Put it this way, after about 4 months i felt the EK9 needed more guts. With the B18CR in and 1 year down the line i still dont really have a need for more power. However i may look into more just to be more competitive, not the fact i feel in needs it.

Hope thats helped.

I don't think the vtec crossover is as harsh in the b18 but I put that down to the b18 having alot more torque.

For some strange reason mine is very harsh. It literally kicks you back when it hits 5.9K(ish) Its a very sudden spurt/rush of power.

Not sure how other B18's feel but mine is an aggressive change over.

put it this way, i ate a 09 bmw730i off the road wi my b18. score! lol

I jus finished fitting mine yesterday and im almost done beding in, an id say the Vtec crossover is definatly more agressive but then i have gone from a JDM B16A to a B18C so might jus be the extra from the type R cams im feeling.

Im yet to compare it against anything as im still running in but 1st gear is an unreall difference as thers almost no waiting for vtec because the B18c pulls into the revs faster.

Personaly sein as i spent quite alot and built mine from scratch to have a fresh motor i kinda wish i had gone down the B20 route for even more torque but it early days yet an i spose my motor aint properly bed in yet with only 210 miles so il wait and see.

But id defo say no regrets.

If i remember JDMarrons B20 teg had roughly the same torque figures as my B18C6

My B18C6 produced 138ft lbs (prob just higher up the RPM's than his 140ft lbs) really need to find my graph.

In my opinion the only regret will be not stroking the B16B sooner!

As above mine kicks in v.hard!!! an i went from only a VTI to a B18CR so the differance is probly even more apparent!!! :nice:

Also the look on BMW an MERC owners faces is priceless !!!!!! :drive:

I love it more now than before an when i got it back it felt like a new car!

Get it done.. u wont look back

Thanks for all the replies guys:nice:

Thanks for that Dan. That means alot, especially considering you have that starbo big bhp beast, yet your not board with your b18c ek9:nice:

 seriously?

Something id love to do only problem is if I decide to swap my engine how much paperwork insurance problems tax etc etc am I going to run into? Or have I just asked something I shouldn't have for some of you? I only ask because I want to do things right. The main issue for me will be insurace I think owning an ek9 is expensive enough in that respect as it is.

I am on the same boat, its already expensive enough for the insurance for a standard car let alone mods.

I have all my mods declared (suspension and exhaust system) and its not too much worse (well not as a percentage anyway lol) I just imagine that when you mention a displacement increase or engine swap insurers will go nuts.

Mine is £650 a year with Chris knott. Road tax ain't an issue as you are still in the same bracket as you are for a 1.6. If you can ge insurance f an import with mods then having a bigger engine won make too much of a difference

Anybody who says they prefer the B16b to the B18c best get to the doctor for a check up. My insurance is an extra £38 with the 2.0, pay the same tax too, happy days.

Is that assuming that everyone is just after the power i take it ? I prefer the B16B to the B18C anyday of the week. I just love the short stoke charicteristics what the engine has. How it just loves having the complete f*#k thrashed out of it. The sound of it can not be beaten by any other Honda engine out there in my eye's (apart from F1). I just use to love the way how it would scream its bonnet off when those rev's where sky high. This is what makes the B16B what it is to me.

I'v owned a B18C before and dont get me wrong there is a nice bit of power extra power and its a cool build to. But it just didn't seem as much fun to drive to me.

Who wouldnt - why have you turbo'd yours if you didnt want extra power???

The B18 loves to be thrashed too - the plus side is with the B18C your going faster which is more fun.

The B18C revs as high as the B16b - its not about the RPM limit though its about when the engine makes its peak power.

B18C makes all of its power around 8000 and the b16b around 8200 - i mean 200rpm of a difference, can you really feel that? i mean considering with the b18c your already using alot more power before the b16b does.

The best sounding honda engine ive heard is Spoons ITR, high revving short geared. Screams more than the B16b.

I'v owned a B18C before and dont get me wrong there is a nice bit of power extra power and its a cool build to. But it just didn't seem as much fun to drive to me.

Never known anyone who would think having more power (not stupid amounts) is not more fun.

Damn :drive:. That's the bad thing about being young, insurance stings you for any engine mods.
