car = 1999 Ek9
My planned engine mods would be arc intake, mugen 421 headers & spoon N1 exhaust. Also will replace stock clutch to ogura clutch w/ lightened flywheel, spoon engine damper & the rest for suspension.. I just want the usual bolt on mods. Would these mods be worth getting a VAFC? How much gain would I get w/ or w/out VAFC? Is higher octane fuel neccessary for a VAFC? Coz here in my area we only have 93 octane max available. Or would it be ok w/ 91 octane?
Once VAFC is installed do I have to have it dynoed?(i think so). Once dynoed do I need to have it adjusted again once in a while? or once VAFC is set then theres no need to reset it unless I add another mod to the engine? Im asking this is coz im bringing my car to an island where we dont have DYNO & professional tuners. i have to have it done on the mainland w/c is 24 hrs by sea vessel.

I dont have any plans to go into the internals anytime soon. So I guess those mods would be it for now. Pls let me know what you think & your suggestions. Car will be arriving in a month. So I can buy the parts now. Thanks guys!!!

blinx, if i want more power besides my i/h/e & clutch? what else? just bolt ons.....

something that can tune both fuel and ignition, nitrious, turbo, supercharger, cams, thin head headgasket, throttle body...

I dont to agree they are a total waste of time.
They are good for dropping the VTEC change over about 200 - 300 rpm to get over them 9 dropping out of VTEC when shifting into 3rd:drive:.

i thought that too when i had one fitted and then mapped :((

ended up a waste...tec was set at 4600 and made the change-over noise
but didnt go onto the higher powerband!
this was on my ek4....ended up going for p28 ecu mapped with crome and
when the tec comes in at 4500 it works:nice:

people who use way lower octane fuel than "japland" seem to think the vafc
is a worthwhile mod when set up via rolling road session
(well in southern ireland anyway i was informed!)

vafc is only a "piggyback" item in the end

dont try and fool the ecu...do it right :drive:

I don't totally agree they do have there uses. I wouldn't buy one but my car came with one and it has had the vtec lowered for when the revs come back down to keep on cam during shifts. still engages at normal point. It has also been dyno tuned for the mods that were on it and help to gain more power through the rev range. Ideally buy a ECU they are not much more expensive and far more tunable you can retard and advance ignition timing... You can't with piggy back init.

I agree that they are good for vtec control but if thats all you want there is alot cheaper out there!!! With a bit of practice you can keep it in vtec while shifting!!!
