Turbo Owners - Any Regrets?

yeah if you want the vid Rich sent me off his turbo honda let me know your email address! its insane!!! Rich is a sound guy and knows his stuff, best to pick his brain!! I am scared of oil pumps now after the problems you guys have had! lol

Thank mate ! ! I havent forgot about the other video's i just don't want to end up dead taking them lol. This weather is so ****, i hate the snow, not as much as oil pumps though.

If your worried about your oil pump causing you grief then install a oil pressure gauge. Theres loads on ebay and there cheap, they might not be the most accurate but they'll still give you a good idea of whats going on. To me a oil pressure gauge should be your first mod as it will most likely be the most important and may save your engine.

I replyed to you on the first page, its the last message...

...The wheelspin in 5th gear doesnt really appeal tbh. I like going fast on backroads round tight bends, so do need traction. Wouldnt want any more than 300bhp.

You may want to look at setting peek hp to around 250whp to help prevent wheel spin. And/Or smaller turbo.

Rich777-- ace! :nice:

Have a standard ek9 on boost and running a T51 ball bearing turbo. After about 6 yrs still no problems...but it was built by Greddy in Japan before it was imported to Barbados. Runs just great and no problems yet to date other than first breaking axles. Have upgraded those since then... and its my only transportation (for now) n it works fine at the moment.

Have you inspected the failed pumps ? I hate oil pumps mate i really do, the slightest bit of crap that goes through them and there ****ed. I think boost just speeds up the process if there's any **** in the oil

Your setup sounds good to me, those CTR cams will work a treat. How many miles are on those retainer's ? You may want to change them or just swap the springs for a set of OEM CTR or ITR with stock retainer's. Personally i'd tell you to put it together yourself as it isnt that hard and may save you some cash + its fun to. But other's might tell you different.... Feel free to pm me any question's you have if you get stuck or need advice.

Mine spin's everywhere in the wet by the way. Its the problem you get with having all that power going to the front wheels lol.

Just saw this.

How is it in the dry/kinda power is yours? Obviously abit of wheelspin is okay, but as said i like backroads the most so still wanna be able to power out of 2nd gear corners etc.

What turbo do you have?

No problemo Rich, just wheneva mate!:D Yea the 9 is staying in the drive after today, far too risky driving it aboot with so incompentent drivers on the road!:angry2:

Good point on the oil pressure gauge, I am investing in a few SPA gauges with my christmas money! :woot:

Its sweet in the dry, i can get all the power down quite easy. I take it you use that Henry guy up your end for tuning, if so ask him if he has gear based corrections in the software he uses. This if tuned right will help you get all the power down that you require. You should talk to him about the type of driving you do, where you drive and how you want the car to preform.

I have a Garrett T3, its the same turbo whats on a 4x4 cosworth apparently. I like it, the only problem is that it only has a 270° thrust bearing so its not a good idea to run it over 14psi, and of course, that is exactly what i want to do.

crome doesnt have boost by gear/speed functions im sure. Could be wrong but i dont think it does.

Yeah but he might be using Crome pro which may have. I'm not sure on this though.... I use Ectune and that has it for sure. Hondata and Neptune have it to.

i had a glanza v 1.3 turbo witch lasted about 8 months got a good buzz when the turbo kicked in launching you back into your seat but the maintenance gets to you i got mine up to 210bhp then things started to go wrong cutting a long story short the bottem end was no more. in my mind a turbo is just and extra thing to go wrong i prefer honda for the reliability and the vtec kick would love to own a skyline gtr 34 one day though who wouldn't !! lol

hi, theres a fella looking to do a deal with my ek9 for hes integra type r turbo..??
what do i need to look out for.? thanks

Even though i bought a half built job and had to put more money than intended into and its still not fully mapped . I have no regrets mate Love it the pure rust and the noise :D

So this is rolling out to the battle of the Glasgow Jordans Lol

The first was on an engine i took out a car i broke for parts and kept the engine. N00b mistake I didnt replace it and it failed.

2nd was after I got that engine rebuilt and the glass beading from the head being set about by the machine shop stayed in it, found it in the vtec solenoid gasket and killed my pump.

Got rid of all that **** and on my third now, holding up just fine fingers crossed.

Why was the head not cleaned properly before fitting? Would have avoided the situation.

Also the first failure I wouldnt put down to a faulty oil pump as such, more the fact that the donor car had been running on its roof, even if the pump runs dry for a matter of seconds it can cause lasting damage.

Moral of the story, most problems are down to poor assembly/building or severe use/accidents, if you do a turbo setup properly from the start then I dont think youll have any reliability issues or an inherant short lifespan of the setup. However, wanting to do it for £1500 is just asking for trouble, imo.

Put it this way mate, Ive spent almost that on the turbo alone for my K20. I dont like speccing turbo builds to a budget, I just spec them with what I consider essential, even if other people think its overkill. Drive in/drive out turbo conversion on a B series I would anticipate to cost someone in the region of £4800-5500 including forged internals and mapping.

that would be with everything though, no stone left unturned :D I dont want to get a name for building cars that blowup, even if its cos the owner wanted a cheap setup, Id rather just leave the budget builds for other people to give themselves a headache with.

I dont mean spending 1500 mang, more what it could cost me in the long run.

Would obv cost more than 1500 but then I can sell my Type R bottom end, mugen Exhaust manifold, J's Intake to make back some money.

Plus I already have crome.

B16/B18 Turbo Conversion Kit - £1,445.00 : Race-Tech, Bring Your Car To Life

that was the turbo kit I was thinking. I may have forgot to include fitting the kit in this aha.

How come you decided to go back to boost gerry?

Got amazing figures from standard NASP setup, so fancying going to the other extreme, since Ill have the N/A Jazz and N/A track EG.

Boosting stock internals isnt something Im a fan of TBH, for the sake of putting in a set of forged pistons. Sure people will tell you the high figures they get, but what you dont see spread over the forums is when the engines break.
