wow man, your garage is really Honda heaven. 3 of the best Honda cars ever made under one roof. the only thing left is to throw away that fn2 and get an S2000 lol.
But truly all things said, which of them all is the best type-R? what about drivability, vtec kick, handling, torque? You have driven them all I'm sure right?
I'm glad you asked!
haha, theres one more honda but can't fit in the picture...
but yes, an S2000 would fit nicely...
I haven't been able to drive the DC2 for about a month since I got it. and Only drove the DC5 for about a week... I spent 20hrs+ polishing and cleaning. Now it's better than a showroom car... All thanks to KITTEN products(highly recommended. Haven't driven the EK9 for about 2 months, battery went flat lol so got a new century battery for it. Startup idles much stronger with newer battery... This is what happens when you work 7days.
Anyway, Suprisingly everyone of them drives quite differently, especially the feel.
Ok using EK9 as the benchmark;
DC2
When I picked up this car, theres a sense of more racyness over the ek9 in the drivers position. With turns, you feel that its a long wheel based car but its not... its slightly shorter wheelbase than EK9. You can just hear and feel everything in this car like the EK9 but just more. Its not an everyday driver friendly car for sure, especially coming out from the DC5. Chassis and suspension feels good and very balanced, however not as stiff as I thought. B18C has more balls down low and mid range compared to B16B. Its a much more balanced engine and has enough grunt for most people. Even though AUDM model have only 193bhp, it's the better torque that gives it a much better pull compared to the B16B. Remember EK9 and DC2 have nearly identical weight. DC2 is just more focused, racey and balanced than EK9. But then again it just feels a bit similar to the EK9.
DC5
Now this car feels totally different from the EK9 and DC2. The chassis is very very stiff and strong. You notice this straight away on the first turn or corner you make. This car makes the DC2's chassis feel loose. The steering has a very short ratio, so you don't need to steer much into a corner or shifting lanes(same as FN2). This car feels really good after you settle into it. However, one thing that was lacking was the engine and sound. K-series have a linear power band because of VTC. But if you pay more closer attention you do feel the kick. But nothing like the B-series. AUDM model has only 147kw/200bhp. Updated Type S has 154kw/208bhp. Still short off the JDM 162kw/220bhp. There wasn't much excitement in the delivery and sound has to be one of the worst. Not racy at all for a stock car.
After driving this car for about a week and getting used to the K-series engine, I started drifting away from the DC2 and EK9. It's just way more torquey down low, full throttle from 2000rpm in every gear change to 4000-5000rpm is suprisingly rapid. This is also due to the 6speed box and 5.1 FD. After getting used to this car, I find it very hard to get used to the torqueless B16B...
theres way too much difference between the B16 and K20. But when vtec kicks in on the B-series, it's way better...
The engine and sound is just different from the FN2, its lacking... (all that will change later as I plan to mod this car.)
FN2(bros car)
Now this is the first car that I have experienced the K20A. This model produces 147kw/200bhp. This engine is the most updated K20A excluding the JDM FD2 CTR model. It's torque is so so so fat that 80% max torque is available from 2000rpm and hits MAX torque figures at 5000rpm.... Crazy!
This car felt very very soft and different, coming out from the EK9. My first impression was, 'this is not a real type R' Should have been called a Type S. But since it was a new car, engine wasn't run in... I've just driven it recently and despite it being 100kgs more heavier than the DC5. The engine just has HUGE Ballz of torque!! From 2000rpm, you get a kick that is similar to the begining of the B16B, and then up from 3000rpm theres this NSX V6 sounding growl till about 5000rpm, then 5500rpm, VTEC kicks in a linear way... Again the advantage of 6speed and short 5.0+FD figure. This car is more fun driving below VTEC, theres just this V6 growling sound that you find from the NSX.
This car feels like it has a short wheelbase. But again, it's about the same as the EK9. Handling and power on the street is very fun with this car. But it's softer than the DC5. Just way too soft to be called a
TYPE R Another thing I just don't like is the high seating position. Interior quality of this car is the best out of all. Although DC2 still has the best looking rear seats.
All in All. I like them all... Even they're all Type Rs, they just all drive and feel in their own special way. EK9 is like a diluted DC2. DC2 is the most racey of the all. DC5 is the new generation Type R benchmark. and FN2 definitely a car you can use everyday and practical, also very torquey.
Right now I'm attached to the DC5(too bad my fiancee will be driving it).
Theres just so much potential in this car. And many locals here in AU are gaining 25whp with bolt-on intake and exhaust. 30whp all up including the ECU. amazing! It's because Honda detuned our DC5s and we have a shitty exhuast system. This car is soooooo quiet and sounds pretty crap like an exhuast sound without a note.
I used to hate the dc5 and was skeptical until one unsuspected day that I own one...
sorry guys, but DC5 + lowered coilovers + basic bolt ons and ECU = Most satisfying Type R.
