K20 running problems HELP

Ok will take a look tomorrow. Didn't notice anything out the norm...

I'm wondering if it's the airfilter causing the occassional poor running...

Induction.

Only noticable in the lower gears. Gona try some injector cleaner. Its worse when its cold.

Ok more info,

Mounts are ok

Definitely something fuel/ignition I am certain I am getting a very slight miss when I get the surging/hesitation.

Going to test the injectors tomorrow both electrically and by swapping them over.

How can I get a datalogger to investigate further.

Absolutely doing my nut if I can't find it then it's going to TGM in the new year.

My 9 gave similar fault and speaking with Will it was the tps, car would cut, hesitate randomly. The tps was faulty when tested though you may be worth ringing him mate.

on a k series, when my tps went down, that was it, no throttle, had to drive on idle.

the small missfire you get down bottom end of the revs under load is down to back pressure, and the only way you can get rid of that is by buying an ecu and getting it mapped, or replacing the stock exhaust? assuming there is a different one on it, as the miss is down to back pressure.

now, the not revving over 5500 rpm, this can be down to having crap earths, or a battery on it's way out.

it's happening because the ecu isn't recieving a steady signal telling it that the car is in gear, so is stuck in the kind of launch control they have.

there you go!

i'll drop you a pm ;)

I think you need to bring the car to a specialist that has an oscilloscope or get a lend of one yourself to read the traces off the sensors and rule out problems one-by-one.

BTW did you drive any other EP3's or DC5's ? A lot of the earlier versions do have a ''jerkyness'' down low..

I agree

Yes I have driven both EP3 and DC5 which I actually put a fair few miles on myself.

Didn't notice anything on either.

Me and mate took a quick look yesterday and he thinks it sucking in to much air either by leak or filter. He has owned 2 EP3's and the DC5 when I took him out in it he noticed it as it bogged coming off a round about then suddenly went again.

Jerkiness I can deal with and drive around. This is so intermittant I try and make it do it and nothing and then randomly it will hesitate/bog/miss/surge at about 1500-2000 rpm.

Losing my confidence in the car big time... Perhaps we should have bought the skoda!!!

Car started missing again today briefly.

Tried the other injectors no change.

I had one coil pack so swapped it with the one I had suspicions of no change them swapped it with cylinder 4.... Hmmm we'll see but car feels much smoother sounds alot crisper it's no where near as jerky or snatchy.

Going to run it a bit longer. Hope it's the coil packs nice easy fix. I suspect it is just where I have been tampering with something...

Fuel economy has been around the 29mpg but recent was 24mpg with NO VTEC! And granny shifting everywhere....

Coil packs are £400 new so I need to be certain

Cant you take it to a specialist like Tom @ TGM?

Hope it is a easy fix and not too much £££ to fix.

Only way to be sure 110% is to read the coil traces..

Biggest killer of coil packs is **** plugs that havent been changed , so you might find the rest could break down over time if the plugs werent in good nick.

Saying that you dont have to change them all ... just the one giving
thats giving hassle at the moment

And coils are less than half the price from the states

Theres a full set of coilpacks for sale on civiclife cheap, theyre mot new but theyre not a common fault on ep3s so id imagibe theyll be good

Absolutely, but it costs and I have the means to test a few things out first.

Wel after swapping that coil pack the surging seems to have dissapeared it is also a lot smoother to drive and very very little hesitation. I suspect that some of the others are not as good as they could be...

Where is the best places to but from the states?

Found a set that have done 40,000 kilometres

Gona drive car again tomorrow from cold if good put the coil pack back in and check it runs bad. Fingers and toes crossed...

Ran it again today and swapped the "bad" coil back in definitely noticed it ran a lot worse and was greatly imporved by the spare coil pack.

So i have ordered

4 low mile coil packs
4 new sparks
New oil
New oil filter
Gearbox oil
Coolant

Give a full service and then i know i have done everything i can.

Fingers toes legs arms and anything else you got crossed. :nerv:

Coil packs have arrived and car feels MUCH better!

Also found the cause of the original need to create this thread....

Drum roll please....

AEM CAI with hydro sock

Been noticing the missing and bogging has returned recently in heavy rain. Went through a puddle today guess what! Car was then a bag of cr@p after, miss firing, bogging and not revving cleanly at all but once filter had dryer a little I could then return to normal driving. Several times this evening I went through a puddle and it instantly started to miss and bog. (Note: I always lift off and close the throttle through puddles and wait before I apply the gas again) but still every time it caused a problem to running.

I am going to get a standard box and get rid of this kit! If it was a EK9 the problem wouldn't be such a problem (I have one on my 9) as the intake is on the r/h away from all the big puddles near the verges!

So glad we have got to the bottom of this. And all I bought was second hand coil packs and serviceable items to carry out a full service.

Thanks for everyone's help, I am confident I can get the car running how it should.

I did read a guy on type r owners forum hydro locked his ep3 with this kit... Not good..
