JohnTurbo's B18C EK4 Race Car

I'm keeping the a2, worry not :)

Mally - Spek did the gears, but I'm 95% sure he also changed the final drive to a 4.4 to make 1st and 2nd longer. Its great fun that box.

So I've got my Group N engine! It was built by 'Mardi Gras Motorsport" who back in the early 90's ran Honda's works rally cars.

The "wild" cams have turned out to be stock B16a, but it has some nice porting, double valve springs all round, a heavy skim, and a baffled sump! (cheer!)

Its reputedly blue printed. The bottom end does look played with - see photo below.

For ref, this is the B16B "porting":- (Just above the valves)

This is my B16A1 port:-

This is a sneaky pic at the crank (behind the windage tray). It looks like its been lightened and/or balanced.

Here is the sump baffle. Looks different tone ones i've seen before. It was probably fitted 20 years ago however...

I'm signed up for Silverstone.
- This engine was sorted out by Keith of Team Toby/Lisa by the way!

Friendly club and a half!

awsome build this, few questions on the gearbox did you just change the last 3 gears or did you do the final drive too ?

not sure what i want to do on mine yet ...

shame about the block though mate i'm having problems at the minute aswell with my b18c6r and it's just had the head re done so i'm a bit gutted ..

The standard B16a ek4 actually comes with a 4.2 final drive, so in order to fit the 96 DC2 LSD I had to fit the 4.4 final drive ring gear and the mainshaft from the DC2 box

I then fitted an M-Factory 3,4,5 close ratio gearset, on the track you only go from 1st-2nd off the line in race conditions so no need to change those gears. They do offer a longer 1st gear which means the standard 2nd gear ratio is closer when changing up from 1st

Nice find with the b16A race engine, hopefully it will be very reliable for you!

Porting work looks well, would be nice to see how a Type-R engine would respond to that sort of porting, better cams and more compression.

I always liked the thought of a proper sleeved B18 type-R engine to get closer to 2000cc, but pointless atm if you class runs 1600cc

Standard ek4 gearbox comes with 4.4 final drive Steve, same spec as the EK9 and 96 spec Integra box less the lsd.

Anyway this car went well so hope new owner takes it to another level.

It actually doesn't Ricky and I found that out the hard way, I fitted the LSD and 4.4 final drive gear to the EK4 box and the mainshaft would not mesh with the 4.4 final drive gear. Then after a bit of digging I found a proper b-series transmission reference guide where I found that the ek4 comes with a 4.266 final drive to be exact and thats why the 4.4 ring gear wouldnt mesh with my mainshaft

So I ended up having to go back and get the mainshaft from the 96 dc2 box to make it work

Never seen EK4 box being listed as 4.2 drive, always seen it as 4.4

The only b series box i can see to that spec is B18B1 box with 4.266 drive.....

Maybe you had those problems for other reasons, im no gearbox expert and know you have done them with your own hands so im just going by what ive always assumed/read on net.

I have read a few threads that bring up 4.266 F.D's in Euro EK4's/Other B16 EK's after Stephen mentioned it a fair while ago.

Here's two for example:

Don't believe what you read on the internet, first hand experience is what I go by to be sure about something but I do use some online articles as a reference. If you count the FD gear on the 4.4 it has 66 teeth but when I counted the EK4 FD ring gear it only has 64.

So much false information on the internet which I have proved wrong in real life a few times

That's right Kris, here is another article which confirms what I proved when building my box

Specnically Speaking: B-series Gear Ratio Guide + More!

Its good in a way as ek4 owners can benefit from fitting a 96dc2/ek9 final drive

Thank god I have a S80 box going by the above!

As I said I know you built a few up so im just going by what I guess 99% of people assume to be true.

Verry interesting lads i have an ek9 box on my b18 swap though dont like the wierd 3rd gear on the s80 boxes.

anyway will go for the 3 last gears then too insted of the final drive

Count the engines...

Got her running. Took allll 4 days of the weekend, fighting me at every turn. Stripped bolts etc as the engines been in and out and apart a lot of times it seems.

Its got a very big skim - maybe 1.5mm

I'm struggling with the idle...its low and stalls easily. I've got it to keep running mostly now, but its at 1100 to idle which is a bit high.

Then, I took it for a run round the block, and forgot the damn bonnet pins..

This is a bit gutting!! The bonnet is not too damaged, but the paint has more or less fallen off as its not keyed well to the resin. - These things are famously difficult to paint. For now I've just bought some white vinyl to patch it up until I find a cheap unvented carbon one for it, then will likely paint it.

your not having much luck with this, not much else can go wrong now though!

gutting! id leave the bonnett , shes not to be parked at a show n shine compitition, built to go fast!

Have new engine fitted and new screen...and patched up bonnet.
Will see if my luck improves!
