Jesse888 Forged/stroker turbo ek9

Nice! Best way to learn is to get stuck in.

Yep! Need to know what it sounds like to be able to avoid it.

Put it on my head and ask me a mathematics questions,
Then you will know what DET sounds like .

Nice bit of kit jesse, looking forward to further development on this .

Well I played about with my daily today. It's an mx5 mk2.5 with the 1.8vvt engine.
The timing on these isn't adjustable like the mk1 mx5s(or our bseries) well not adjustable to most people lol
Here's what I did,
This engine uses a crankshaft position sensor, the ignition system uses this sensor to know when to fire the sparkplugs. It's not adjustable in anyway and just bolts down by the crank. So I took it off and got the drill out.

Notching the sensor like this allows me to change the time at which the sensor measures the crank. So effectively tricking the ecu into thinking the engine is afew degrees later into its stroke and thus delivering the spark afew degrees earlier.
I backed this theory up with the knock monitor before and then after I saw this

Pretty sure I could hear it at high rpm and the monitor seemed to back me up every time. It's on 95ron(naughty naughty) ATM but i'll put a tank of 98 in and then see if the noise i think is DET goes away.
All fun and games and some more lessons learnt today.
I need to find a way to trick the knock sensor on the engine, I think it's pulling timing from it when it senses the knock, I want to hear some severe knock to confirm what I'm hearing as light knock.

Haha nothing like a man with a new toy lol
Love it !
Keep us posted pal . Just don't be to hard on the little mx5lol

Haha yeah I thought better on this old beater than my forged block!
This mx5 has seen better days, I don't expect it to get through the next MOT the arches are literally falling off it lol
Engines great on it though!

So I'm due to pick up the car Saturday! Pretty stoked to see it again

Since the last update sam decided to run the golf rad and the new manifold/turbo is on and majority of the exhaust is now built and on the car.
Here's an exhaust shot

So leaves me around 1 month to get the car back into shape and tuned, well... tuned and back into shape(first things first lol)

It may well be unpainted for japfest but I do plan to have it track-able. Assuming there's still tracktime available I'll be on.

Exhaust looks tasty

Yeah man....It has vbands!
I've always had bodged/scrappy exhaust systems so this is the first time I've had something decently made on any car I've owned.
Strangely more looking forward to seeing the new turbo/manifold and the exhaust over the roll cage lol

This is really cool! Nearly bought one of these myself untill I realise I could use my picoscope to detect knock using the OEM sensor haha
Always wanted to have a try at EFI tuning. Have you had alook at the Hpa academy videos? Lots of useful information and help in there

Yeah man hpa has helped heaps.
The only issue I can see with your method is no filtering of the noise, if I run the plex in "no filter" mode it's so noisey I struggle to hear the knock and just hurt my ears lol
Apply say a 6khz filter to the signal and it's MUCH easier to hear.
I bought this because I'm hoping to tune other cars eventually, so it's more of an investment to me than a toy.
Atleast that's how I justify the cost of it!

You see the signal from the picoscope rather than an audible note and you can add a filter and triggers to filter out all the noise, obviously not the greatest thing because you can't hear it and need to keep eyes on it but better than nothing I guess. Maybe one day I'll make the investment!

A quality hand made exhaust is very exciting!
Your whole new setup is going to be very very trick.
Can't wait to see pictures, and to see it in the flesh at Japfest.
I think there is still track time, I've got a slot at 10:00

I've been following your build since I joined on here Jesse, it's turning out better and better. Really like your car. Unfortunately I won't see it at japfest because I'm going to watch the time attack at Cadwell the same day.

If your ever fancy a track day up at Cadwell I will come along too.

Ah ok. So you'd see a spike in the signal when knock is detected? Seems like it would work fine for large knock events, not sure how well it would pick up light knock though

Cheers guys. Me and a buddy do want to get to Cadwell sometime this year Liam so I'll let you know.

Hopefully I can get a tune on this new build pretty quick, then I can commit to some tracktime at japfest.

I'm there on the 26th May. I might stick a thread up.

Basically yeah, you can adjust the voltage levels and such so that even small knock event would come up as big on the screen. Keep us updated on the tunning, really interested to see what happens

Ah cool, apply the filter that you mentioned and that should cancel out the engine noise.
Will update with datalogs etc as and when I get to each stage of tuning.

All coming together nicely now mate ! Looks the business that .
I'd say your itching to get her out on them lovely dry roads ! Gets better and better every week , top work from @Beetlejuice , the go to man for all your fabrication needs ,
Well is the little mx5 still breathing? Lol .
