JDM EK9 Race car project nearing completion

I may be able to get you one, but here's the main problem:

1. It comes as a kit with mounting brackets for a flat surface, not for a hatch. The brackets to fit it to the hatch came from a different wing, specifically designed for hatches. So actually you would need custom brackets or two wing kits to make this work (and holes drilled in your hatch!).

2. While looking really cool and aggressive, it does create a lot of drag. It would be fine on a street car, but for high speed racing applications it really hinders top speed (by 20-30km/h!!!).

3. Something this big would cost an absolute FORTUNE to send anywhere, due to the size. It isn't heavy, but it IS large.

4. Looked for a brand, but couldn't find one. I suspect it's probably MIC*

I tested a Spoon wing at the track the other day, and the results were really good. I;ve managed to find a Spoon copy, which in my opinion is actually more useful than the original Spoon, being that the bolts go into the wing from the bottom (not down into the wing like the Spoon) enabling you to space the wing at the rear to achieve a better angle than what the Spoon wing has (similar to EG Spoon wing).

I've enjoyed looking through your build thread - its changed soooo much throughout keep it up!

Well I've just finished packing up the car and all the gear for the first round of Honda Cup!

Leaving for Taupo tomorrow, racing doesn't start until Sunday though. I'll be visiting an event on Saturday and I'll try and get some pics of the Hondas that are competing, I've got a couple of mates racing that should do quite well.

I'll get some pics of my new stuff too ;)

Oh, and some video of the racing from inside my car! Hooray!

WELL...

A mixed bag from last week's meet.

1st Race:

Got in front of my nearest rival and stayed there for the whole race, finishing mid pack and third in class, but the car was overheating badly. Took it in to the pits during lunch time and had a look at coolant levels, which were a bit on the low side, so bled the air out of the coolant system and went out to race again.

2nd Race:

Got stuck behind an 1800 EK9 who couldn't do anything but block, and being a tight circuit I just couldn't carry enough speed through the corners to pass him. Ended up watching my nearest rival disappear into the distance, leaving me beached. Car was over heating again, so took it easy for the last few laps with coolant up my windscreen :( Back into the pits I borrowed a leak-down tester and sure enough, blown head gasket. F@%K!!!

3rd Race:

DNS, watched from the pits as nearest (now distant) rival drove to 2nd overall, and 1st in class. Damn.

Got the head off as soon as I got home and sure enough, head gasket wasn't sealing properly once the block was hot. Have already had the head skimmed and have a new gasket ready to go back in, just have to find the time, maybe tomorrow.

Next meet is on the 20th, at the track that is in the vid on the previous page. We are already doing similar times around there (me and rival that is) so will be very interesting to see who comes out on top this time. Better put full slicks on methinks!

This thread is absolutely amazing, gives me a few idea's to try out at my local track events to hopefully put down better times.

Keep up the amazing work!

Cheers!

What happened to the turbo idea :) ?

Hey Blinx thought you dropped off the earth!

The turbo idea is "still in the works" bu I have had my hands full with another car project that I have devoted some time to over the past few months.

He has a CW EK9 that is far, far, far more mint than my old shitter but is carrying a lot more weight so a lot more work is needed to make it competitive. When I have more to show of that car I will make sure to get pics up for you all toi look at.

Also, my "engine builder genius guy" has decided to bugger off to Europe for a coupld of years so any engine building (serious building that is) will have to wait until then. That's a bit of a shame, because before he left we were playing around with an F20b with the head on backwards ;)

Stay tuned for that one!

The last couple of race meets have been a disaster, the cheapo clutch I replaced at the beginning of the season has given up already, so a new one is sitting on the table ready to go in. Oh well, that's racing I suppose!

On the flip side, the roll centre adjusters that I put in before the last meet have absolutely transformed the car, turn-in is nothing short of miraculous! Lowered the hell out of it too, as you can see in the pic below:

The front splitter now has so much downforce it almost ripped the bumper to bits! As we speak I'm revising the mounting and attachment method ;)

Tim your car is truly AWESOME! Looks like alot of time and plan has been put into your build. Great to see a EK9 being built to this kind of level :)

In this picture to widen the wings did you just put spacers behind the two bottom and top brackets at the rear of the arch? Or did you have to do some modifying to the arch?

Thanks mate :)

The wing was spaced at the bottom (about 25mm), and the top was bent (yes bent!) from this

If you can follow? Just pulled the wing out from the car and the "channel" where it mounts to the car bends to allow the wing to sit out from the bonnet (there is about a 20mm gap between the wing and the bonnet). It helps to slot the mounting holes at the top of the wing too.

There is something else you need to do if you want it to sit out further, but that's a secret :secret:

I've got spares of all the body parts but I would imagine it's a bit far away

Good luck, pm me if you want to know more :)

Thanks to everyone who has followed this build so far!

I won't go into how the Honda Cup season went, BUT needless to say I need to look at saving some serious weight.

The car is booked into a local workshop on or around the 3rd of December, and it'll have:

1. Lose about 100kg or so
2. Full undertray and rear venturi setup
3. Fuel cell and external pump/surge tank setup

Should go even better in a line and around corners, and I haven't even started using full slicks yet!

I'll update the thread as the pics come in from the guys in the workshop, as far as I know it hasn't been done before!

Got some pics too, take a look:
