Ive been speaking to my own importer and a few other companies about importing in an ek9 at the end of the year.
One of the importers, who I contacted, quoted me a very good price indeed. However, I would need to go down to either Liverpool or Southhampton docks to collect the car, then mot, tax and register it myself.

Ive been doin some thinking, and the only thing that puts me off is, what do I do if the car fails its mot, and how would I go about driving the car home from the docks as it will have no plates. A friend of mine said, insurance should not be a problem, as long as I can give them the chassis number?

Is this worth doing, or dyou reccon I'm best off payin the little bit extra, and getting one over thats tax'ed mot'd and ready to roll?

Thanks for any info

if you do decide to import one without the tax, mot and sva.. make sure the car is standard. tests will need to passed in standard form.

type-r-dunk help! hehehe sorry I can't help you but I dont know the UK laws :(

Hi here i am ;-)

First off as long as you book a MOT (near your home) and are on your way to it you can legally drive without plates as long as you are insured.

If you get stopped just tell the officer you are on the way for a pre booked MOT and offer the MOT station phone number for them to check.
If you end up in an argument with them like i normally do then pull out your trump card. Tell them to check. Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994, Schedule 2, Section 22 and it states in this section you can indeed drive without plates.:nerv::lol::woot:.
Don't let them say "we will let you off this once" just reply with you aren't letting me off as i haven't done anything wrong.:woot::woot:

The car auctions at Liverpool and Southampton are primarily trade and sell some good cars but there is also some real crap to put it bluntly. It can be the low grade stock that didnt sell in Japan. HAVE A PROFETIONAL CHECK THE CAR WELL.

All the registration process can cost up to £1000 and be a lot of hassle if you haven't done it before. Also the car will prob need Cam Belt, Full serv, Tyres, Clutch maybe, Seat bolster, bit of bodywork repair, £200 purchase fee from trade seller. All this could also land you an additional £1000. So add this into your calculations. If they are quoting only £5500 for say a 97 ek9, that sounds cheap but add the £2k. That could be £7500 for a lot of hassle when for example my 2000 rx ready to drive away excellent condition is £8500. I am not trying to get you to buy mine just bare all this in mind.
Good luck and feel free to ask for help, Duncan

a couple of years back on the a1 north of newcastle i was bringing a gt4 up the road fresh from the docks,i was charged with no tax and mot etc,i told the police that it was legal to drive home to your first destination without plates, still got charged, however the procurator fiscal never proceeded with the case against me,i have a department for transport book from 2002 which says this is legal, you can't get this book anymore as they have brought out a later version and have worded it differently but the law has'nt changed.

Thanks again guys

@ Duncan - Thanks for that mate. After reading what you said, I definately gonna pay the extra, and get one through my own importer. It seems a lot less hassle, to get one thats ready to drive away with mot,tax etc.
How much do you usually sell the 97's for, i.e standard, low mileage grade 3.5-4?

if you wait a couple of months te price of 97 ek9's will be coming down a bit as they will no longer require an sva test, just the mot/tax/registration

i've got to agree with Dunk though, you get what you pay for when it comes to imports and i'm very glad i paid the extra to have my ek9 imported by a reputable importer :D

Point taken mate. My importer said the exact same thing, i.e. wait till the end of the year to get a 97".
He imported my current car, and although I had to wait a few months for the him to find a nice one, then import it over, it was well worthit:)

Thanks again guys

Hi you would be looking at about £6-£6,500 thats on the road ready to drive away.
Cheers Dunx

Hey Dunx. How much roughly will they go down by, by the end of the year/early 2008?

Thanks

to be honest your gonna find that the 97s will stay arond 6500 on the road or so. the prices were expected to drop due to the cars not needing the very expensive and pain in the arse ESVA test. but due to the cars not needing this test people are willing to pay more for them at auction now.

i am bringing one in through auto advan. i paid 5700 for it at auction.grade 4. 45k. standard. so probably just over 6k on the road depending on tyres clutch cambelt etc....budget for 6500 to 7000 if i was you. www.autoadvan.co.uk are good as they do most of the leg work for you but dont charge as much as most traders do on top.

goodluck mate. i'm currently importing my ek with Torque imports and have been very impressed so far.....they're really on the ball :nice:

Thanks dudes. Half of me feels to place the order for one asap, but I still need to test drive one:angry2:

get to auto advan and buy one ;) i have never driven one ...or even seen one on the roads! lol im in love and thats it

LOL. I might just do that mate. I never drove the starlet turbo before I bought one either so might just take the chance again:)

Hi
Why dont you just go and test a dc2 if you can find one of those locally. It will give you a good idea of what the ek9 will be like.
Good luck Dunx

Thanks Dunx. I'm heading off to test drive some 9's this weekend. I'm just having a browse through the imports sites up here in the North West. However, most of them have a bad rep, but as long as I test drive one, I'll be happy enough:nice:
