EK9/Civic
Well I decided to create this thread, since whats the mayor problem of the B16B, it lacks of torque :nerv:.....

The EK9 weight is 1090 kg - 2403 pounds, mine weighted with all the tools + half talk of gas 2410 pounds, but I have a carbon fiber hood :)

Less weight = :woot: more power

Hehehehe

This write up is focused on a daily driven car, no "strange" modifications needed.

The first thing you should do is to change the front hood (bonnet) the oem one weights 30 pounds, the carbon fiber or fiber glass hood weights between 8 to 15 pounds, so with this mod you can loose between 22 to 15 pounds :nerv:.

Change the OEM Wheels, the OEM (Enkei) wheels of the EK9 weights 15 pounds each without tires. I would recommend this brands:

Spoon - 8.55 pounds
Desmond Regamaster Evo - 8.55 pounds
SSR Type C - 9.87 pounds
Advan RG - 10 pounds
Volks TE37 - 9.70 pounds.
Racing Hart CP-035 - 10.14 pounds
Ray'S CE28N - 8.82 pounds

This weight is for: size 15×6.5J - 5 x 114.3

(This information is not 100 % exact)

This wheels weight range is between 8 to 10 pounds, you can remove 20 pounds of weight by installing after market wheels, and the most import that this is unsprung weight. (In a ground vehicle with a suspension, the unsprung weight (or, more properly, the unsprung mass) is the mass of the suspension, wheels or tracks (as applicable), and other components directly connected to them, rather than supported by the suspension. (The mass of the body and other components supported by the suspension is the sprung mass.) Unsprung weight includes the mass of components such as the wheel spindles, wheel bearings, tires, and a portion of the weight of driveshafts, springs, shock absorbers, and suspension links. If the vehicle's brakes are mounted outboard (i.e., within the wheel), their weight is also part of the unsprung weight.) Visit here if you want more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unsprung_weight

Change the OEM header, the oem header weight 28 pounds, a after market header weights between 11 - 15 pounds, you can remove here almost 15 pounds. :nice: I recommend, Toda, Spoon or Mugen Header.

This is a crazy mod for a daily driven car, but you can live with it, you can remove the radio + speakers, a double din radio with speakers weight 18 pounds, you can buy a radio block off plate so you don't have a "hole" in your dashboard.

The OEM EK9 Honda Civic Type R weights 19 pounds, you can change is by a light weight muffler, Spoon, Apexi, Mugen, the after market mufflers weight range is between 10 to 15 pounds, you can remove 5 to 9 pounds with this mod.

The OEM Recaro weights between 40 to 45 pounds, you can change this seats for bucket seats, usually fiber glass / carbon fiber / carbon kevlar bucket seats weights between 8 to 15 pounds, you can remove like 40 - 50 pounds by change this seats, but this will affect comfort, keep in mind this.

If I remember of more ways to reduce weight I will post them later :nice:

stock flywheel weights 14lbs aftermarket is 8lbs thats 6lbs :) eliminate power steering or ac, or even the windshield washer fluid, but mine isent a daily. also you can get a carbon hatch? not sure about the weight difference there.

Yeah, but with no a/c or power steering on a daily drive, you will be IN PAIN man, tell me I suffer that for like 6 months lol :angry2:

Very nice tips rvm. :nice: Something to say about the wheels, I'm sure that SSR Type C are lighter than Volk Rays TE37 though but less weight doesn't necessarily means better quality and reliability when it comes for wheels. Everybody should know that!!

carbon hood is a great way of eliminating weight..!

saw my friends SEIBON carbon hood, looks well finished too... any other brands which make GOOD carbon hoods for 96-00 eks?

jst wondering... would replacing the hood alter car's front grip? or aprox 20lbs is not big diff? :thanks:

rvm...another small diff r the mirrors! which u hve recently replaced...:nice:

electrically power folding mirrors (ONLY EK9) weigh loads... as i jst recieved mine yesterday:shocked: however i think its way cool for them to fold electrically! :D :nice: :D

Enkei rpf1's in 15x7 +41 are 9.5 pounds. I recently got these wheels and saved 10 pounds per corner vs. my 16x7 rota gt3's. (15" tires are lighter than 16" tires, keep in mind)

For those of you without an ek9, sound deadening tar on the interior floor pans will save you up to 18 pounds, and removing the interior fire wall mat can save you about 10 pounds.

Most carbon hoods save you about 15 pounds over stock, while the better ones save about 20 pounds.

Vtecroadhog the relationship between weight gain and traction gain is NOT linear, so reducing weight with a carbon hood (or reducing weight in gereral) is always beneficial.
If you think about it, if you were to go in the opposite direction and add a hood that weighed 200 pounds, do you think the car would corner better because of the exta weight on the tires? No way! It would break traction sooner than with a stock hood.
A carbon hood actually helps with evening out the fwd car's front to rear weight distribution, helping to even out the load on the contact patches.

Thanks. . .:nice:

with wheels, I just got some SE37 16" and still weighs only 10.5 pounds each. So thats 4.5pounds lighter than stock and makes it look better than 15s.

Carbon hood is a really good mod providing that the hood has it's safety moulds underneath, you wouldn't want to have an car accident without the moulds. Oh, and it will sound better too... heheh

Blinx said carbon hatch which would be very good too, after that you'll be having one loud beast to live with everyday... lol

How do you mean it'll be louder; do carbon body parts like the bonnet and hatch make more wind noise or something??

^The car will be louder if you take out carpets, sound deadening, rear seats etc

Yea i realise that but what i meant was do the carbon parts in particular make the car louder?

carbon is thinner, and dosent absort sound, metal does abosorb some sound.

how heavy is the 5zigen mani comparded to the standard one ????

also how heavy is the spoon n1 and b pipe comnpares to standard?? im jus after buying lol!!

cheers lads
