hi wondering if anyone can help, my cars started blue smoking from the exhaust quite badly, its always burned a bit of oil and little bit of smoke at point of vtec engagement but this isnt normal. Performance hasnt changed and iv not noticed the oil consumption go up. It only smokes at vtec crossover and a little on overrun from high revs, but not below or when cold, so dont know valve stem seals, piston rings ? surely this would be gradual not going from normal to properly smoking, any help much appriciated, thanks

What car have you got?? Engine?? Sounds like its bad news. The dreaded blue smoke :(

does it smells like burnt oil when you decelerate from high rev?
if so this might be the valve stem seals.

when you decelerate it generates a lot of vacuum, therefore oil is being sucked through the intake valve seals.

I've always been told that smoke on overrun is valve stem seals, on acceleration is piston rings.

If its smoking bad when accelerating up thru the revs then your rings are most likely shot. Leak down test might help to confirm this.

why not do a compression test to find out mate.
only 10 mins job.

cheers for the replies people, its only smokin once the vtec kicks in not at all before and its just started happenin can the rings just go? thought it would of been a gradual thing getting worse over time, but il have to get the compression test or leakdown test done see what the crack is. With regards the rings anyone know what sort of costs involved dont fancy doing it myself.

Compression test might not show up anything as the compression rings might be fine but the oil rings could be worn letting oil past. new honda oem rings are around 200 then labour on top of that. I'd really advise getting your bores checked with a dial bore gauge if going down the route of putting new rings in to make sure your bores are within spec and not gone oval cause if they are putting new rings in won't solve the problem well not for very long anyway.

well cars better now. I had changed the oil about a week or two before i noticed the blue smoke. I had added some prolong additive and oil used was castrol edge 5w-30. So decided it was a bit of a coincendence that its started smoking soon after so i changed the oil after a bit of research found that alot of people use 10w-40 castrol magnatec and most of them report little oil consumption, so i changed to that instantly the car smoked a lot less and over the following days no smoke at all. Two weeks later and all is well no smoke and no oil used its better than before. Iv always used full synthetic castrol 0w-30, 5w-30, 0w-40 and all used around a litre over around 1000 mile with weekly top ups. The oil now has been spot on and over two weeks stayed bang on the top dot and no smoke that i can see on crossover either which it used to before.

I don't know what it is with castrol oil but I here nothing but people complaining about there engines burning oil when they use it.

yeah that seems to be the case. its a very difficult subject to get your head round. many diffrent views and opinions with no definitive answers but the semi synthetic seems to be doing the trick so happy days.

semi synthetic is what honda and spoon recommend for these engines. i dont understand why people insist on spending £15 a litre on "performance" oils, regular oil changes are much more beneficial then expensive race oils.
semi synth ftw

Going from 5-30 to 10-40 is just a temporary fix. I mean what would be next, 20-50???? Keep in mind using 5-30 at cold temp is GOOD, you need oil to flow at cold start up.

Piston oil rings, as mentioned, might be a cause; same with the valve seals.
Also mentioned, check the bores. I personally would check it all and get back to 5-30; for the life of your engine.

If your sticking with the temp fix, [10-40] make dam sure you warm that engine up on cold starts.

I don't know what it is with castrol oil but I here nothing but people complaining about there engines burning oil when they use it.

believe me, i did put castrol 10w-30 high mileage in my type r b18c, almost blew it up, because it only gave me 1k miles on a full oil change....only 1k, bich was dried where vtec wouldnt cross over....switched to royal purple, was wayyyyy better...didnt like the oil alot, so now im on mobil 1 10w-30 fully synthetic extended performance. very good oil.

iv never run any of my hondas on anything other than 10w40 semi synth, had oil burning issues on some and no oil burning issues on others..

...surely if HONDA recommend 10w40 for the engines then thats what you should use seeing as it was them that designed the engine? my honda hanbooks for my ek4,ek3,ej6,ej8,ej2,ej9,mb6,eg5,eg4,eg3,mb2,mc2,ep2 all stated 10w40 all ukdm btw

I have always used 5w40 synthetic and never had any problems, one thing to note is that on the track my car used nearly no oil with Fuchs Pro-S and used a couple of hundred ml with Mobil1 5w40 synthetic.

My EK9 JDM handbook states to use 10w40 for normal protection and 5w40 for advanced protection. I will try and get a copy of the page
