Hello everyone,

Bit of advice really, the b18 in my teg seems to be a bit Smokey at vtec crossover , nothing drastic tbh but I'm fussy as hell and its doing my head in.just wondering how much a rebuild would cost from a reputible company or roughly what's involded in DIY'ing it and cost of parts etc?

Just a OEM build.

Thanks in advance

Dean

Boyle done one on his, I'd give him a shout. He works for honda so he'd give you a rough idea how much.

Go for a rebuild, just get it done by someone decent, drop some hi comp pistons, bit of port work on the head and reap the rewards my man.

No offence but this is what I did and many others and look where that landed us.

Flog the engine leave it alone and get another one.

Wish I could do it all over again, wouldn't have wasted my time and money,

Speak to stevenEK9 and DV8 on there experiences also.

If you rebuild it properly you won't have issues.
Why would it magically break if you build it to Honda tolerances?

It's poor attention to detail during build that causes issues!

Exactly! I've rebuilt many engines and all are still running fine to this day with no issues.

I think you could get Honda to do a full OEM rebuild for about £2000. That would include rings, shells, valve stems, head skim, valve seats recut, cam belt, full gasket kit. I got it done for less as I work for Honda and did some of the work.

Look up my build thread for more info

You speak from people who have had unfortunate circumstances, you don't capture the wider audience from people running "built" engines that are reliable, which they are, like i say if built right.

Right from the words of a tuner himself (vtec6000)

My 1.3 Glanza is running 325bhp through it on a forged built engine and i've had no issues whatsoever, if the B18CR i have just bought starts to smoke in the future i will also no doubt replace the OEM parts with high comp pistons and some decent rods. As said above as long as it is built by a professional and not DIY'd in a shed it will be better than new!

Ive been looking to do this also.

Parts are roughly £500, that will get you;

Bearings
Rings
Full gasket set
Oil Pump
Water Pump
Cambelt kit

Anyone know what machine work would cost for a hone, 3 angle valve job and a good clean up?

if you want it rebuilt properly - speak to Henry for costs

that is all i will say, he is the only person i would trust in Scotland to build an engine

not going to tell you to leave it alone - if it is using oil or down on compression then that is a stupid idea, but have a word with him, he really knows his stuff

If it's down on compression I would't advise leaving it alone.

But most smokey 18's are guides and seals. Having had mine apart twice to resolve this issue by 2 so called reputable companies mine still smokes and I am down a lot of cash.

All I am saying is I wish someone had warned me off the hassle and agro of this which has ruined my 9 for me and to say I don't love it anymore is a massive understatement.

Once it's been apart you don't trust it's reliability, even Andy will vouch for that on his OEM rebuild.

My advice get an untouched engine. Honda reliability wins hands down.

I don't trust any professional monkey with my car anymore. Could do a better job myself.
