B18c rebuild costs

I bought the b18c off daragh k on here

He used all Honda parts cost €3000 without labour I think.

Doesn't burn a drop of oil and vtec6000 mapped it there the other day it's running sweet.

Load of shite saying can't rebuild one properly !

If it's down on compression I would't advise leaving it alone.

But most smokey 18's are guides and seals. Having had mine apart twice to resolve this issue by 2 so called reputable companies mine still smokes and I am down a lot of cash.

All I am saying is I wish someone had warned me off the hassle and agro of this which has ruined my 9 for me and to say I don't love it anymore is a massive understatement.

Once it's been apart you don't trust it's reliability, even Andy will vouch for that on his OEM rebuild.

My advice get an untouched engine. Honda reliability wins hands down.

I don't trust any professional monkey with my car anymore. Could do a better job myself.

Henry's work is amazing though - from speaking to him i know he knows how to build one PROPERLY, been in the honda game for about 20 years

he helped baird build his old engine that is in andy's ek9 now.........

i've seen a 650bhp twin turbo NSX he built the engine for and tuned too, unreal

trying to get him to build you an engine could be tricky as it takes him a while as he finishes all the bores by hand etc. he did offer to rebuild my B18 bottom end when my luck ran out with it, but i chose to go K20 instead

Thanks for all the advice guys, I've sent Andrew Baird a message so we will see what he says and take it from there

Messaged Andrew Baird but not had a reply yet so will see what happens with that and decide

I recently rebuilt a b16a2. Here is a quick run down of parts/cost for me.

Head
• Banda Engineering – skim, acid clean, clean valves, regrind valves with new stem seals, reassemble valve springs and rocker arms. £90
• New genuine Honda Stem seals. £40
• Camshafts, valve springs/retainers from JDM Integra - already got
• ITR Inlet manifold and 62mm TB - already got
• Tegiwa PTFE thermal intake manifold and throttle body gaskets. £45
• New Genuine Honda exhaust and inlet studs and bolts. £9
• New genuine Honda exhaust manifold gasket. £18
• ARP headstuds - already new on engine
• New genuine Honda head gasket £50
Block
• Banda Engineering – Inspection/measure of bores and crank. Disassemble acid clean and rebuild with hone on bores. Block/crank in good shape with no machining needed. £120
• New RIKEN piston rings £45
• New ACL Duraglide Trust/Main/Rod Bearings £100
• New genuine Honda bottom end gasket set. £50
• Water pump refitted (100miles old)
• New genuine Honda sump gasket £18
• Tegiwa sump baffles welded in £15
• Magnetic Sump plug £8
• New genuine Honda thermostat £24
General
• New CV boots (inner/outer) replaced on drive shafts £34
• New genuine Honda fuel filter £23
• Replaced camblet side engine mount with almost new item, with all new genuine Honda nuts/bolts. £20
• Gearbox Oil replaced with Honda MFT3 £40
• Tegiwa Magnetic gearbox plug fitted. £8
• Reconditioned OEM Fuel injectors from Spirit9 (with print outs) inc purchase of injectors £85
• Tegiwa Aluminium racing radiator fitted. Filled with MOTUL super indulge coolant. £106
• Engine filled with 10w40 Mineral oil and Hamp oil filter x3 £48 + £21

Total £1017

Take into consideration the like of CV boots, and running in oil etc... so more like £900 as I replace a few bits for peace of mind.

Yeh I know I could have bought a b18 for that but I now have a brand new engine, with a higher spec so I am happy. Plus I learnt a lot in the process.

As you can see I payed for a machine shop to do the main engine work and assembly of pistons/crank etc. And I assembled everything else myself, saving a fair bit.

90% of the parts listed above are exactly the same as for a b18c....just got to shop around online for the best prices.

thanks very much for that mate ^^

deffo gives me ideas now

^^^^^^ It's either right or it isn't. *Tut,tut Ian... * no need to be so negative now ;) .

Merely stating my experiences. Wish someone had talked sense and stopped me. Should have kept my B16b!

I agree it's either right or it's not. But it seems to be more often NOT than it is right.

I know lol, I understand your frustration... trust me. I think you tend to "over think" things too much though. I say: F*ck it, enjoy it for what it is - if it blows up at least you had fun doing it ;) .

Sorry to hi jack the thread here.

It is currently my opinion but I would like it making power up to 9k so I can feel "hey it's complete" I am thinking if she pop then it's time to part.

Hi guys, can someone let me know how to contact "Henry" what's his company/contact details please?

Henry has went downhill recently. A lot of horror stories, I don't mean 1 or 2 I mean like I know 6-7 engines that have blew up a couple of weeks after he has touched them.

I would advise going elsewhere mate

If you rebuild it properly you won't have issues.
Why would it magically break if you build it to Honda tolerances?

It's poor attention to detail during build that causes issues!

Learnt this the HARD way this year!

Blimey, I recall some folk referring to him as "Honda god".

henry quoted me 600 to build any engine then 300 to remove and replace said engine so thats 900 before machine work and parts. he done work on my ek9 before ignition timing , timing belt , water pump and service he was ok but it noticed i was in his yard 7-10 times and the same cars were always sitting uncompleted. i was warned from a few members to avoid him and 2 companys who used to deal with him in scotland told me not to go near him. i removed engine myself split it and sent it to west of scotland engineering for machine work and now rebuilding it myself with help of my friend whos a mechanical wizard. save so much money on labour and get to learn what your honda is made of

The price he quoted is reasonable imo however all I hear now is bad things about his work. That said my mate jamie got his b18c removed rebuilt and mapped for 1100 iirc and it's still going strong. However it doesnt get used that often and to be fair he is very kind to his engine. But id agree that you are far better to learn how to do it yourself #lifeskills lol

My EK9 a few years ago was mapped by Henry (before i bought it) and it somehow made 168bhp at the wheels....but it didn't pull worth a hell compared to when the standard EK9 ECU that I put in it.

Exactly! I've rebuilt many engines and all are still running fine to this day with no issues.

True. Ive had one of the engines done this way and its running completely fine without any problems or smoke. All you neeed to change most of the times is just valve seals. They will never last in perfect condition any longer than 40k miles... But after a change there is no smoke at all. If car is skoky on Vtec then it must be valve seals.
