What is a Civic MB compared to a Civic EJ/EK?

I really don't get the Civic MB. It's such a difference to the EJ/EK; interior, exterior, difference in selection of engines and from what I understand also in terms of handling. Why was the MB ever called a Civic? I mean, how weird would it be if a Ford Mondeo would also be called a Focus...that's what this feels like to me.

I always seen them as like a baby accord. Really should have been given a different name. As you said they don't even look like other 6th gen civics

Baby Accord would be the best designation indeed...Accord Mini or something.

really they should have carried on with the Concerto name as that is essentially what it is the successor of.

I did a suspension swap for a mate on one not so long ago - was surprised to find the front was all the same as DC2/EG but the back end was a complete mix and match of metric and imperial size bolts, and has EG lower control arms. I was expecting it to be more like an EK because of the year. The two nuts on top of the dampers were also a complete random size. This car was 100% standard too.

I think it was a way for Honda to get in the european market with a diesel engine.

A lot of carmakers are doing in today. Just walk into a Subaru dealer and look at how many of the car windows are labelled Toyota. Same with Huyndai and Kia. are the strangest thing of them al, the Fiat Durango.

edit: just read your post completely and I totally missed the point:angry2:

Just noticed someone already mentioned it's mainly eg suspension parts. I had a nightmare getting aftermarket parts for it as if you say 98 reg civic you'll get ek parks but everything is actually off an eg bar the rears struts.

For the price of one (500-800) you won't get a civic with air con/lsd/282mm brakes which always makes me wonder why people pay over a grand for poverty spec ej9.

I've had loads of these and to be honest best comfortable civic's I have ever driven, perfect drive, perfect space, big brakes and power

I had one running 205hp and there was nothing on the streets that could touch it even with it being heavy

2 best ones we had, all work done by our selfs

1st mb we built

Had a look at these before I bought my Accord. VTI-S seem nice but I can't get past the looks. I actually didn't find the accord all the good looking either. Either way, they're an okish car.

Love the wheels on that red mb6 :) i know there like vtis wheels but you dont see many sets

the mb series have a great variety of engine specs too, with d14/d15/d16 engines which have different parts in various aspects (ecus, cams, brakes, intake manifolds not to mention the interior parts), which make me wonder how financially beneficial would that have been after all. Also the rover counterparts had different layouts too (suspension and mechanical wise).

I would say they are one of the best options if you want a cheap, reasonably fast but practical vtec. As has been said they are pretty much EG/DC in the suspension and running gear.

There are a few lesser quality parts made by lucas ect. But overall they are great cars especially for the price of them these days. I picked one up last year for £400, have put a little bit of money into some Koni's, wheels and exhaust. For how usefull the thing is I will probably be keeping it till it rots away then just buy another. I always wanted an Accord R but after getting the MB6 and then looking back on the Accord, the MB6 is just so much more practical and cheaper to run, for a bit less pace and power.

Do think the chassis could do with being a bit stiffer though.

I was going to buy an mb6 before I got my ek9 but I heard all round the car wasn't great.. I drive one before and I have to say for a 1.8 they are dragging themselves everywhere :D

how fast is the 1.8 comparing to a b16 ek as I know they are heavy and long geared. Also does the oem lsd give any fun in spirited driving?

To be fair its the Ultra long gearbox that lets them down. But saying that even with the extra weight and long box they are still faster than a EM1 Coupe. Probably on par with a B16 hatch but off course not handle as well with the extra weight. They do have a good bit wider track than an EK4 so guess that will help.

End of the day you can make a car as fast as you like. For what you pay for a half decent MB6 you will have plenty of cash to upgrade, in comparison to buying the likes of a half decent EK4 or B16/18 swapped hatch for much more money.

Out of the box I would class it between a UK EK4 and EM1 Vti for pace wise. But far more practical than either, more potential having a B18 already and already equiped with bigger 282/260 brakes.
