VTEC sounds odd

I've got a standard facelift ek9 and when the VTEC comes on the noise is not the same as other VTEC's i've owned or been in or other ek9's i've seen on youtube. Also the car struggles to pull before the VTEC comes on. I used to own a VTI civic and the noise that made was immense and had no lack of power. It's starting to worry me :(( could there be something wrong with the engine :nono: ? Maybe timing or something? Any help greatly appreciated.

cam timing could be a tooth out.

Ok here is a link to a vid of the rev counter. It doesn't sound too bad on this video but its not the best quality and hard to capture the sound. Would it be worth me getting the timing checked any way just to be safe? Also the thermometer reading is always on the low side never in the middle does that mean anything? Cheers guys.

Seems to pick up the speed ok. Do you have a aftermarket exhaust or induction kit? cause without these you wont really here the vtec switch over

it cant be standard as you cam crossover (vtec) piont seems to early, unless the sound and picture is out of sync?
the temp gauge should sit between a third and half normally,
if its always running cold then you need a new thermostat,
you could be constantly running on cold start mode, making it overfuel and run badly.

It seems to switch over at around 6200rpm on his rev counter which is ok

video quality is bad so hard to be certain.

Car is totally standard, temp gauge sits at about a third jus thought that was low thats all. So it seems about normal for sound, pace and pick up then? Think I should get it checked out or not?

Yeah mate, I taught as much that it was stock, The pick up seems fine and you can see it pull harder past 6200rpm so wouldn't be worried. You would benefit from adding a cold air intake and exhaust that will give you better power throughout the rev range. If you were to open your airbox and drive down the road you would hear the vtec engage clearly, Id only advise this as a test and not to leave open permanently.

not much wrong with that, Pulls well revs well. Your probably just paranoid like me!!! lol

Looking into the exhaust and induction. Was thinkin spoon for exhaust and not sure bout the induction. I had an AEM on last car made a noticable difference throughout revs. Any advice?

Best to search the forum for advice on exhausts and induction kits lots of info available. I like the spoon exhaust's, I used to have a spoon street style but found it too quite I think the N1 would have been a better choice but im now running a 5Zigen which is rather loud. If you want a very deep loud induction noise then id say you cant beat the J's racing carbon fibre one and also I found better throttle response with this over stock airbox.

how's the maintenance on your car?

as in oil level, plugs, valves adjusted etc?

oil level is between marks and checked regularly. I got 0w30 oil in it. Not checked plugs or valves as I been busy trying to sell my old car. Thinkin bout gettin a service done by a honda specialist. Cam belt was changed at 60k miles. I've only done 1500 miles since I bought the car and changed the oil the week I bought it. Got Hamp oil filter on too.
