VSM EK9 K20 Turbo Project

Yeah torque drops off with mine quite bad at 7000rpm. Clearly hitting an airflow limit of some sort.

Like I say I'll have some fun with it for a while, then I'll knock up another header/exhaust and probably an RBC inlet too

Got the graphs from Will:

Plus some comparisons.. This really shows a lot - how it compares to my old b16b when he dyno'd that originally. It wasn't exactly slow before, but it isn't easy to convey how much quicker the car is now - this graph sums it up nicely!

And finally one showing how it compares to my fiesta before we ripped the engine out of it!

Did Blyton in this last week. Had a cracking day out and a lot of fun, but it did highlight a few issues with the car, so picked up a few new toys to fit this week and hopefully remedy thore few little problems:
- Firstly, I managed to cook the brakes on the first outing. Not good! My money's on fluid well past it's sell by date, so that's the first thing to correct. Picked up some ATE Typ 200, so will flush all the old out and replace it this week. Brakes never recovered all day, so had to be real gentle with them from then on. Hopefully just a fluid change will see it right, as pads/discs are already very good, so a further upgrade will prove costly!
- Secondly, when we swapped the engine not long back, we replaced all the front end running gear with that off a 98 spec DC2 and while it was in bits we stripped, cleaned and rebushed every component, so all was good as new. I didn't have time to give the rear the same treatment at the time, so all the rear suspension is still on 120,000km old bushes. It really upset the balance of the car, to the point where it was putting a big dent in my confidence and didn't want to push it any harder. Front end feels pin sharp, where as the rear is horribly loose and wanders about doing as it pleases
Needless to say there's a full set of bushes and new rear arms now sat here ready for fitting!
- And lastly, spring rates! Decided to go up slightly to try and correct a bit of the excessive weight transfer I was experiencing when the AD08's got nice and sticky. I found I was unloading the inside tyres too much in some of the bends, to the point where it'd lose grip and slide a little too easily, so hopefully this'll be an easy fix.
Spent most of the morning pressing the wrong button (never used it before!) on the GoPro, so haven't got much video. I've a handful more to upload when I get a minute

Nice work, especially all the exhaust fabricating. Hoping to do a k20 swap myself soon, hopefully it shifts as well as yours :drive:

I've got some more fab work in the pipeline for this, but I'm a little swamped with work at the moment. Got a few big projects to get out of the way first, then I'll get chance to have a play with this again.
Also, I want to make absolutely certain I'll not be changing the engine spec, before sinking a load of time into designing/building a tuned header for it. I think there'll probably be a change of cams coming up, along with an RBC or RRC inlet, so need to get those on first before doing the exhaust system.
Seriously suffering with ground clearance on the current exhaust too, so will need to bear that in mind with the new setup also!

It's amazing how responsive the k series are to Wills tuning opposed to the B series.
Just under 150whp to over 190 must be a fun change ?

Hoping to get near 165 next time I'm up his or even better 170whpmfrom my b18, it made an okay 157 last time with loads of issues haha.

How long did the swap take you ?
By reading it, seems not so long

Not long at all really. It was three weeks before I was able to drive it, but a lot of that was down to waiting for Will to have a bit of free time, ecu to turn up, diff to be fitted etc.
It could probably be done in a weekend if everything was ready to go beforehand.

It's definitely a big step up from the b16. Biggest bonus really is the 6 speed box which really helps it pull!

DAMN! awesome car

i wish i also had a EK9 type-r besides my EK4 then my life would be complete!

btw awesome welds 10/10 and build!

Just about to start making another exhaust. 3" this time, ready for a bit more power. Waiting for some more material turning up, so in the mean time I'm just doing some of the prep work.
Just finished up making a pair of 3-4" transitions for the mid-box:

Need to do the same for the back-box now

Nothing set in stone yet, but I've got a few spare parts laid about that I'm thinking of putting to use on this. Namely, a GTX3076r and associated bits and pieces. Got some ID1000 injectors going spare too, so the way I'm looking at this - for the cost of a clutch, fuel pump and a few other bits and pieces we could have this running some good power.

Would you mind telling me where you get your exhaust parts from, I would like to fab my own exhaust. just re-read your post that you made them yourself.

My suppliers wouldn't be any good to you as they only deal with trade, but if it's just for a one off you might as well just buy bits and pieces from eBay or your local exhaust place

Thanks for the reply, some great fab work in this thread.
