hi guys,

wondered if anyone could shed some light on a problem i am having..

I've searched and searched but there is so much crap info out there i thought i'd ask on here.

the car is a Starlet Glanza V....

I pulled away earlier and my turbo boosted fine but then the car suddenly felt very very sluggish and the engine sounded like a subaru..

Boosting as normal right u 0.8 Bar but it doesn't seem to go any where and it sounds like a scooby, sort of like a rumble vibrating noise.

i spoke to my dad earlier and suggested it could be the wastegate sticking shut.. I remember i had fuel cut issues in my last starlet but this has a JAM ecu running things so fuel cut isn't an issue..

It almost feels as if its stalling.. if i use light throttle i can see it boosting to 0.3 - 0.4 bar and its as smooth as anything, put my foot down a bit further and it bogs down and makes a rumbling / burbling noise.

PLEASE help me.. could it be the waste seized shut ?

the mods to the turbo are : HKS actuator / Stainless manifold 4 - 1 entering turbo and then a decat and a full HKS system. Its been boosting absolutely fine for about 3 weeks now..

any help would be brilliant. even just simple stuff so i can take it somewhere and explain whats happening it almost sounds like a missfire.

Check spark plugs! Also the king lead on those is known for giving trouble so check that also.

If the waste gate was jammed shut you would not be able to control boost ( sky high) and the turbo would over speed, checked for boost leaks?

is that the 5th spark plug lead... As in the one not going to a spark plug but from the dizzy to somewhere else..

the engine is smooth in normal driving..

Shall i try new sparks and ignition leads first then..

BTW really appreciate the fast help..

- haven't checked for boost leaks... i can't imagine how this would make it rumble like a scooby though. i had a booost leak before when one of my intercooler pipes can't slightly loose... i remember that felt quite different.. like it was boosting fine but not much power... this seems to rumble and almost stall when boost fully comes in..

if i feather the throttle at 0.4 boost it runs perfectly... if there was a boost leak would i still get this ?

Yes it's the lead which goes to coil mounted on bulkhead. Remove distributor cap and check rotor also incase it's broke.

ok cool, so its probably not turbo related.. ignition / spark related.. ?

i wouldn't know what i'm looking for on a starlet dizzy unless its just simply broken lol.

Well i'll order some new leads / sparks and a dizzy to be safe.. TBH parts ain't that expensive.. it is running OEM leads currently so i wouldn't be surprised if thats thats the problem..

thanks again.

It sounds like it's spark related. Less spark energy is required at lighter loads to ignite the mixture but at higher loads where it is required if you have a bad lead or even one bad spark plug it will become more evident. Check distributor and all leads leaving it if new plugs don't solve the problem.

as said above ! brother had alot of problems with his 5th lead coming lose  , ended up using a cable tie to hold it in place and never missed a beat after that !

this forum always amaze's me.. posted the same thing on toyotagtturbo and only had 3 views and no replies...

Long live EK9.org and its users.

You have put my mind to rest chaps. i will sleep well now lol

Thanks especially to VTEC6000

No problem mate, good to see you still hanging around here:nice:

Also whip plugs out mate as depending on what heatgrade have been put in, the plugs may be burnt out!

Before you spend any money check that it's not got water settled around the spark plugs, this used to happen to my old glanza from time to time as the square seals did not fit that well in the cam cover. Piece of cloth long screw driver and a squirt of wd40 fixed it!

it was the ignition leads chaps.. changed the sparks/oil filter and new oil also... while i was at it i added a baileys dump valve ;)...

car made 112hp on the dyno this morning with the leads failing.. swapped for some replacement leads that were 40 quid while i wait for the magnecores. anyway she made 175hp at 11 psi boost... not bad for a SS manifold and turbo back system with a hks mushroom filter.. hks actuator and a JAM ecu... cant wait to get a rrfpr/injectors/fuel pump/fmic and raise the boost :)

just wanna say thanks guys i knew youd be right :woot:

Sure does mate, its great knowing he didn't even touch the tune also and the JAM ecu is running really safely... :D

Print outs to follow shortly once i get a good picture.

Final figures were 171.5 Hp and 142 Lbs ft running at 0.85 Bar

:D :win:

Don't buy magnecor leads, they are utter crap they don't seal properly on the cam cover and the ends pull off really easily as they are just loosely crimped, had mine on the car for a couple of months, went to pull them off to change the plugs and they fell to bits,

It used to be possible to get ngk blue leads which are awesome!

Nice result for the mods :nice:
if you have jam ecu you wont need rrfpr/injectors to raise the boost as they run silly rich already but obviously get a/f ratio checked first to be 100%
