robthedoc's ek9 turbo, adventures in boost!

Mine never went that far but it was the 16 cvh kent cam, Ashleigh manifold and home made exhaust, webber 28/32 with K&N. No one could convince me there was a faster car on the planet when I was 17.

Suppose I should tell the whole story... It also had morrette twin headlamps and full fibreglass 'predator' bodykit from quad conversions, painted in British racing green. Massive sounds and rs turbo recaros lol

Got any pictures of that beauty?
I had my first one about 10 years ago, paid £125 for it, spent a week of evenings welding it for the mot, put a set of Webber 40's on it and abused it, also had rs turbo recaros in that.

I kept the second one with the Zetec up until a few years ago

I'll have some printed pics and negatives mate, somewhere at my mums. I'll try and dig them out.

Was txtn you on FB about the car
you told me to sign up here so i have 29 pages of info to read over the coming evenings
savage figures and looking forward to reading up on spec

Life after tuning be goooood! Shave, haircut, no new parts of hands damaged. Just wish it would stop snowing....

For a bit of a laugh I thought I would write the spec on the car in case anyone just wants to know what lies underneath the ek9 body.

So

Car is 1998 Early Facelift EK9 Type R

Chassis

The underside of the car was completely stripped and then cleaned and dried. There was literally zero rust on the underneath of the car. Old underseal was removed and the car was fully masked off before 4 coats of 3M underseal was applied. The Engine bay was rubbed with scotch brite and the areas of surface rust on the front valance where rubbed back to bare metal and treated with Hammerite Krust. The rubbed areas where then etch primered and the then grey primered allowing adequate drying time between coats. The bay was then re painted in NHO Honda Championship White.

Rear
Trailing arms were removed from the car and blasted back to bare metal. As were the rear ARB, ARB D brackets, Hubs. The process for paint was as follows;

Two coats of etch primer were applied before a final coat of grey primer. Then 3 coats of gloss black and finally two coats of clear lacquer.

416 whp
367 ft/lbs torque

I've probably missed loads of stuff but I think that covers the good bits

Lads got the hardrace catalogue under his car, FairPlay.
Seen as you've got a 4 port boost solenoid couldn't you have run a real weak wastegate Spring? Then atleast you've got a lower power mode than 340@0.8.
Suppose who wants to lower the power lol
What boost pressure is the 500hp at?

@jesse888 I could of done mate and may do in future. The wg came with a 1 bar spring set up made of three springs, small/medium/large. I removed small spring to come down to .8 bar. next time I might remove the medium and refit the small and I think this is between 0.6 and 0.7 bar. Max boost pressure is 1.5 bar

Yeah I run 0.4bar in mine, I only have a 3port solenoid though also I'm not sure how much pressure I'll be able to get before I run out of duty cycle.
Probably like 1.2-1.4bar.
I find having a small spring makes the car alittle more versatile, like the last trackday at brands....

It would definitely make it more driveable with the solenoid off but had a bit of dry road driving and tbh from 3rd gear and up @ 340 it's fine. Will see how it goes at 490 once theres some heat in the tyres and the tarmac lol.

Yeah get a summers day(in Scotland?) and some warm semi slicks and you'll be laughing.
Have you thought about a traction bar? Essentially ties the lower control arms to the chassis and stops them moving forward/backwards under load. I've heard they almost completely stop wheel hop and are great for torque steer aswell.
I've been contemplating one for a while but I'm not sure what it'll do to a trackcar that sees a lot of suspension movement(up and down)

haha yeah we get a summer usually starts around mid july and ends around mid july lol. Nah it's not that bad tbh mate usually get at least a good 3/4 weeks of really high temperatures, I'm talking like 18/19 sometimes even 20 degrees! That's when the factor 80 sun block comes out for the pale ones like me!

I'll have a look into them mate... see if it's cost effective lol.
