This is the engine

JDM B18C-R 13.2:1 CR built with

Wiseco Semi-Coated Slipper Style racing pistons
IBspec RODS
TODA Spec C Cams
SUPERTECH B-Series competition valve-springs and retainers
Viton stem seals (Inc new guides)
A1Tech headstuds
Bosch Injector Dynamics 725cc ultimate injectors
Hondata S300 ECU (Inc launch control)
AEM True time cam gears
Mugen baffled sump
Setrab 19 Row oil cooler

I'm running Silkoline Pro S 5w 40.

Several questions,

This time of year I am only seeing oil temps around 75deg (it has a thermostatic) plate is this ok? If I put the damn heaters in it drops to 71/72 sometimes. Measure at the sandwhich plate.

I usually wait for oil to warm up to at least 40-50 deg before driving, would prefer to warm the whole engine faster by moving of at say 20deg? What are your thoughts?

To some up

Is my engine temps to low during winter?

At what oil temperature can you behind to drive the car safely? Obviously warming up with low revs of say 2500-3000.

Thanks all.

I would have thought 90degrees would be optimum.
Perhaps the thermostat in the sandwich plate is opening abit early? Could try blocking the oil cooler off with duck tape or something and go for alittle drive. See if the engine gets hotter.

Never reaches 90 normally 80-85 during the summer months unless driven spirited of course. And on track it's higher but normal road use 70-75 winter time and 80-85 summer.

If its a mocal thermo plate, then they are open around 80 degrees, but they are never fully shut.
You must have your car started and idling a fair bit before it reaches 40/50 degrees? Just block off the oil cooler with cardboard and just drive it.
As for 75 degrees oil temp in winter, id say thats fine.

Yes I think it is mocal. It gets up to temp pretty quick then slows down.

At what temp can I just start driving it instead of idling for ages and wasting fuel.

I always drive it straight away.
Quicker you start driving the faster it warms up is the way I see it.

I agree and if it was OEM I would but being that is built I am frightened of hurting her!

That's to low for oil temp, oil should be hot enough to boil of any contaminants such as condensation inside the engine, and also to reach the correct viscosity. I'd be looking for closer to 90degrees

Whats the difference? You will still be driving along. Whats changed that will make your built engine any different to an OEM one, when warming it up?

just drive it whats the point in worrying mine heats up to around 80/90 but im not gnna sit around waiting for it to get there thats just titish!

under daily driving my oil temp is around 90°C, on hot track days I've seen peaks of 130°C. I'm running 5W50 oil in my engine.

Just block airflow to the cooler in the winter months with a small sheet of plastic

80-85 is ideal for normal running, i always wait for oil to reach 80 before boosting the audi or wot in the beemer

5/40 is fine in that engine.
5gives better start up protection, 40 will break down later than 30.

70c is the (so called) recommended minimum so I wouldn't be to concerned in all honesty. Think of all the people out there that use their cars for quick trips I.e. to the shops and back. Providing you're using a good oil (which I know you are) I wouldn't worry what so ever. It's not exactly like you're turning the key and raping the life out of it lol.

Just carry on enjoying it mate...

I used to warm up the car like you do (ie by idling) but then I was told by my friend who's a mechanic not to do it, because it actually increases wear. He told me to drive straight off and keep to 3000 rpm until warmed up, then you can start pushing it a little. When the engine is idling it takes far too long to warm up. The best option would be dry sump, you could then pre heat the oil :) or put an electric heater under the sump for 15 minutes :D

I would be more concerned about the oil pressure to be honest.

Damn my car is efficient! Blocked off 3/4 on the cool side (so exit) and still only managed 80 tonight got a bit higher earlier this afternoon but christ its cold out!
