No, not as safe as wearing a helmet, but when you give people the option, some naturally choose the safe route and others don't. How many people do you know that play everything safe in life?
 
i didnt wear a helmet last time i went but ive just bought a new open face helmet for a trackday so when i go back il deffo wear it as i have the option :)

Yet more great pics, this is just making me more and more impatient to go back!!! :nice:

So if you jack the car up, and wiggle the wheel left and right (like the direction it would move when you turn the steering wheel), you feel there is play??

If that is correct, definitely check your track rods!!! Inner and outer indeed
Wiggle the weel (or have someone to do it) while you lie under your car. Check the outer tie rod then, if there is play, it moves kinda up and down (of grab the outer tie rod with your hand and trie to wiggle it up and down). If the outer rod is fine, but you feel play on the wheel, the inner rod is blown.

Incorrect toe settings have bad inner tyre wear as a result.

Definitely check the suspension rubbers too. Take a screwdriver or so and lock it between the suspension arm in a way that you are able to make the rubber bushing move. This way you can test/feel it much better.
