Just been to my local Toyota dealer today to enquire about one of there:

They only got one today and hopefully have a test drive over the weekend. Even the Mrs likes it so may well be chopping the EK9 in for one if I like how it drives. I have to admit though it does look pretty awesome in the metal and one of a very few cars I'd consider buying new anywhere near this budget.

What's everyone else's views on them? The press seem to lap them up and the specs are pretty decent too......

I like the ae86 better. But i see why you like this. Scion and subaru also use the same base to make another car called the frs and the brz. I think it has around 200bhp and weighs around 1230kg. Nice power to wieght ratio.

How much are they?

There were 3 of these at the track last time I went.... one was quicker than me, 2 were slower. I have a very light tuned EK9. The quicker 86 was tuned, somewhat, but I am not sure exactly how....
They are maaaaassive in Japan right now! Every magazine is full of stories on them, features, new parts coming out, tuner cars etc... There are rally cars, GT300 proto models, TRD model, HKS tuned versions, etc...

I think they are going to be hugely successful, and probably spark a new generation of light-ish 4 cyl NA RWD track-worthy cars....
The Subaru version looks fun too, probably even better.

I wonder if Nissan will release a new S16 silvia to compete...

Pretty much spot on £25k.... Other options at that price are Audi TT but a low spec. The GT86 comes pretty well specced out as standard. Very few optional extras which is a good thing IMO

Pretty sure it's not! They haven't even officially said there will be a boosted STi version.... although the speculation is that there will be. The Subaru has slightly stiffer spring rates and a different badge and that is pretty much where the differences end. Plus Subaru haven't officially launched theirs yet... but will cost exactly the same.

IMO on the road the Toyota will prob be the better to live with and on the track will be very little difference.

On the forums im on all these people saying its 4wd.

Very high on my next car list, just a shame I have to wait till they come into my price range :(

we have just got one in at work. they're ok, not fast cars at all id wait for the turbo version to come out if your after abit of speed. Interior isnt bad i quite like the feel of the seats they hold you well. HATE the wheels. Pretty average car tbh.

TRD have alot of accessories coming out for them aswell. exhausts, spoilers, bodykits, brakes, suspension, wheels etc.

I think they look brilliant apart from the odd few things, but as said above A LOT of tuner companies in Japan are making stuff for these car's, engine also has a lot of potential.

Definitely going to be/is massive. The Subaru is rear wheel drive, I posted the spec list somewhere on here; taken directly from the Tokyo auto salon

once the tuning companies start designing and manufacturing aftermarket parts they will be a lot more desirable

also not in love with the fact it has a **** boxer engine

Well tell them they are wrong :))

The standard car is 0-60 of 7.6 so it's not that slow. I know it's not the quickest of cars but it's all about how they drive..... which is why I'm waiting on the test drive. The fact they have a incredibly low COG and the all new boxer engine is meant to be fairly good still has got me interested enough, I wont be able to stretch to the turbo'd one cost wise I'd imagine. Plus this will be my 1st RWD car so I'll be greatful there's no turbo lag to catch me out mid corner, lol.

That red colour looks way too plain. My dealer has the orange colour which looks awesome..... although the Mrs likes the pearlescent white. I was hoping NOT to having another white car!

would be a nice buy. if it was in my budget i'd definately think about one. if the price was around the same i'd probably go for the subaru one to be honest. and the subaru is definitely 100% RWD.

Any particular reason?? After looking about Subaru will sell it for £24,995, the exact same price as Toyota and then add on the options etc. Maybe it's me and getting old but having slightly softer springs sound like the better of the two options, lol.

Also swayed by the fact I know a few people that work in the workshop Toyota.... so I know it will be looked after!

I ****ing love this car! Back when I was at uni I penciled out a design for a small RWD coupe, it looked scarily like this GT86 and I had even decided it should have a NASP boxer engine. Toyota plainly employed Leonardo DiCapri to enter my dreams and steal my ideas but I am over the moon that this car actually exists now! :win:

Cannot wait for these to start popping up on the second hand market in three years time, I WILL own one. Hopefully that engine can be tuned out to much higher RPM, it's got 12.5 compression so it should be able to handle some pokey cams.

Yummy!

If only they offered it with VVTLi...
