HELP is my engine really a B16b?!

Okay i will take the valve cover off ASAP.

It just comes right off, no special steps to avoid wrecking something? I wouldn't think there is, but just making sure. before I go ahead and take it off.

take off bolts round cover, take off sparkplug cover and take nuts out
from under there.
then your ready to take off cover, might need bit of "pulling" as sealant on
rocker cover gasket can take hold on head :)

Comes right off dude! Just note, before you put it back on (if you're going to run it), replace the gasket seal!

The head should have printed PR3-3 on, and the intake manifold p73 if I dont missremember, the transmision S4C (at least mine are that codes and are b16b confirmed),

Okay so valve cover is off, here are the pictures.

Is it stamped PR3-3, above the exhaust ports:

pr3-42.jpg

?

it's hard to tell if it has dual valve springs from the pics!

In fact, forget that, the casting stamp doesn't actually tell us whether it's a B16B head or not....just read up properly!

hmmmmmm

No its stamped PR3-1, shown in a picture in the initial post.

what exactly does that tell us?

As hard as I look I cant see the inner springs, I tried with a mirror and everything but its a tight spot.

Any other way to tell?

Hmmm, just wait for some other people to post up, I'll have a good read around, but from the pics I can't really tell, sorry!

eh aren't those pics showing the two valve springs per cylinder or am i missing something?

It's not that they have 2 valve springs per cylinder, since there are 16 valves....16 valve springs etc for all B-series engines, it's a 16valve 4 cylinder engine......what he means is dual valve springs (at least that's what I've always thought lol)

Dual valve springs use two springs where other applications only use one. There is the larger outer spring, and a smaller inner spring! :nice:

it does no look like there is a inner spring here i can faintly see the stem of the valve and the top of the valve seal. original poster what do u see on the exhaust side? you got the best view not us.

Well I cant really see an inner spring on the intake side either. do the always have two?

But the intake springs seem to have some yellow a the top, and the exhaust ones are a faint green at the top.

I will try moving something along the springs tomorrow, if they are indeed dual springs i shold feel the inner spring

check behind the distributer as the best heads get a lick of green paint before they get sent to be ported and polished into type R spec heads

the paint is marked as an indicator of a flawless head and as i said is situated behind the dizzy

Good point, was going to say that myself but wanted to see if we could figure it out beforehand, as taking the dizzy off can be a pain sometimes! :nice:

Thats not a b16b head, it has an OBD1 fuel rail on it and all b16b's are obd2. I suppose someone could have put an obd1 fuel rail on it but what would be the point of that? From the pic it also looks like a B16a intake manifold.

You guys are tons of help.

I am going to confront the guy with all the reasons why this isn't a B16B head.

+ No dual valve springs on exhaust side
+B16a Intake Manifold
+OBD1 fuel Rail
+Originally a black valve cover

There is a TINY TINY amount f green SOMETHING on it behind the distributor... its hard to even say its there.

Well I suppose it is possible that it's a CTR head.....if it has the green?!! It can easily wear off after time, since it's only paint!

However I wouldn't mention that first, I'd confront him and ask why it has B16a intake, OBD1 fuel rail, black valve cover and no dual valve springs (if indeed they aren't dual valve springs).

Be interesting to see what he says, you might catch him off guard lol!

Okay, the paint is absolutely exclusive to Type R?

Yep (as far as I know)

If you have the paint but not the valvetrain, he may have sold the valvetrain, put the B16A valvetrain in, and hence added the OBD1 fuel rail + intake etc.... bit strange though!
