Hi,

My EK4 is running really rough at the moment, it started sounding like a scooby, over a few more days it started getting worse, changed from a scooby into a chopper (bike) really loud lol, time to see whats been going on, i changed the spark plugs with NGK's started the car back up it was fine back to normal running good, I drove the car down to Devon yesterday ( 70m from me ) the trip down was fine, had a good day watching the racing.

Then the terrors started again lol :nerv:, i came back to my car and tried to start it :nono: it sounded terrible when the engine was turing over trying to start, and not to my suprise the shocking misfire was back, but this time it was alot worse, it smoked alot when giving it a few revs, there is also a tinging noise that gets louder as you rev it, i poped the bonnet and it sounded like it was coming from around the bottom of the engine but i'm not 100%.

here is a video i took so you can hear what its like -

I had another look at them spark plugs, this time i noticed only in the no1 cylinder there was oil all up the spark plug tubes and in the cylinder, the spark plug was burnt quite bad, it had only been in there for one trip.

heres a pic it had already been cleaned up before i thought to take pictures but its still not good.

Anyone with any idears? :thanks:

cheers guys.

Try a different set of spark plug leads first and go from there

wit the spark plug geting covered like that after one trip and the smoke in the video it could be a cracked piston or rings worn.

Yeah the cars only just started smoking heavy like that, but before it was thirsty on oil and smoked a tad in vtec.

sounds like yours rings were worn. but that doesnt explain the misfire and your plug geting so wet.

best thing to do is take out your plugs get one of your mates to turn it over and see if its spitting oil up through cylinder 1 if so then your most likely looking at a cracked piston. in any case oil should not be geting to your plug.

If cylinder no.1 isn't firing then your washing the bore as petrol is still been injected so your plug could look like that. Check your spark plug leads and rotor/rotor cap

wouldn be heavy smoking like that though would it??

I'll try it and see how its goes :nice:

The Leads are only 10months old how long do they normally last? I'll take that rator cap of now and see what its like.

cheers

get set of new spark plug seals and change the plug for new 1

spark plug tube seals were replaced not long ago mate, done them when i painted the rocker cover.

bolgeR - i took the spark plug out of the no1 cylinder, got a mate to turn it over with the plug out, i coudn't see any signs of oil coming out.

Vtec6000, i had that roter cap off check all the contacts, and the contact on the roter arm it all seems ok, anything specific i should be looking for ?.

cheers

If the contacts look ok then the cap should be ok. Were the spark plug leads oem honda?

No the leads are not from honda mate, there NGK blue from oemjapparts.

correction, piston rings need help...time to rebuild maybe?

if plug tube is filled with oil only way it can get in is via plug seal or a crack somewhere

oil in cyl, rebuild time

So, you put in new plugs and it ran fine for a while; you park it and its back to oiled plugs tips when starting...something is cracked dripping down off the plug onto the piston. Seems like when the engine is HOT the "crack" seals itself from expansion, opens up when cool [contracts]to allow oil to start dripping again.

Has your engine EVER overheated?

Have heard of those leads failing before. If you can borrow leads off a mate just to try... I find it strange how you had the problem then it went away for abit and came back again.

By the look of that video your piston rings are shot. I bet if you done a compression test that cylinder would be real low compared to the others...

So it looks like its rebuild time then for her, do a search on ebay for nippon b16 piston rings. There a fair price and there a quality set of rings.

Oh yeah, and dont get driving her until she is fixed or you'll just wreck somethink else....

Actually i take that back, sorry i should of read it better. When you say it was back to life and running good was it smoking at all ?

yep, replaced the plugs it ran good for a 70 miles, checked the plugs and the spark plug in the no1 cylinder was burnt real bad.

the engine has never overheated its always been spot on in the middle of the gauge.

fair enough, ill get hold of another set of leads can't do much harm having 2 sets, its a nightmare mate no car at the moment :|

rather than a rebuild could i not just soruce a bottom end from a b16b/a and problem solved ?.
