Has anybody has experience with these cars interms of living with, running and performance (16v). I know it wudn compare to an ek9 but

Asking because got offered one for very very cheap, could be a nice little side project

All comments welcome

Driven quite a few, Brother had 2 as well.

They are pretty fast cars for what they are, but quite old to drive IMO. Not my sort of thing but a cool little car none the less. And easy to maintain, easy to work on and cheap parts.

I think they are the best classic VW, and looks pretty cool after few modification like ride height, wheels etc^ maybe a vtec engine that will be intersting^^

I was impressed by the car for something that is 20 years old,

Going to hopefully collect it next week had have it as a little side project

Is there any good forums that I should check out

I know of golfgtiforum.co.uk

i had a gti 8v around 6 years ago, had a kent cam and a few other bits, was a good car at the time,

gear boxes seem to be the weak link on them, changed a few.

Lovely cars! I had one very recently and a very easy conversion was to install a VR6 lump into it. A very cheap and easy installation that truly transforms the car into a beast!

I'd say it would be much quicker than an EK9 with the conversion done. Dont get me wrong, the chassis can handle the VR6 lump very well and not too bad for grip. You do feel the weight up front though!

Get yourself onto Edition 38 Forums

Hi there Ive had two valvers as said before parts are very accessible , wouldnt say they are fast , not compared to the 9 anyway different league . If its for a weekend car / summer fun Id say go ahead but as a daily it didnt suit me just wasnt reliable enough . overheating was a nighmare on one of mine as it had been running bigger power by the last owner . heres mine I recently sold .

Its just going to be a car for the weekend and nice sunny days.....it wont compare to an ek9 but i have always liked the euro look on the old mk2

not going to be putting alot of money in it!

The millage on the one i getting is low but have seen examples with 180k on the clock
Are the engines reliable?

I`d be sure to check the miles are legit . hpi check before you buy . If its had regular servicing it should be fine are you getting any history with it . If its a half decent example you should be fine their easy enough to fix with alot of room to work . Alot of money in them also . any pics?

I've had 4 of these great cars!

I would say the genre of the thrill is the same as what the EK9 has but it is not as much. EK9 is the same thrill just more of!

I've had 16v's and 8v's and prefer the 8v's. 8v's are also decent on fuel too.

One of my last 8v's did 243k miles and was still strong as a ox.

This to watch out for:

2nd gear syncro, will crunch on fast change
Rust on:
Battery tray
front wiper blank
grommets in the boot
jacking points (stick your finger in the hole, it should still be strong, if it flexs or crumbles, its terminal
sunroof drain channels, it rusts behind these

Other then that, it should be ok.

3 doors are much more desirable compared to 5 doors but you have to pay for the privilege.

Few pics of my last one:

^^^ Did you sell that to a bloke called Tim. Slightly odd chap?

I had 2 mk2's and loved them both, Also two Polo G40's and a Mk1 golf with a 16v in it to begin with then a G60 lump.

my gran has had her golf mk2 gti for 18 years and i have not got it to sell on!
after driving it it still pulls really well and has only done 80000 genuine miles :)
they are great cars :) even if it is just for a runaround

Yep mk2's are a good car I've had an 8 and a 16v a bit heavier than the mk1 I still have but still lighter than an ek9 so drop in a turbo conversion and quicker too

a granny with a gti awesome! What's the spec & price on it?
Cheers chris

haha yeh a granny with a mk2

they were originally wanting 4000 for it but it needs some work so i am going to get it stripped down and get all the work done i reckon it will fetch arounf £3000 it scompletely standard bar a pioneer sound system and 6cd changer as well as bbs alloys i will get some pics up of it :)
