Going to buy a laptop, advise please!!

I have no idea whats available in the UK but allow me to clarify how i personally buy computers, i DO NOT buy them from a store like most people, i order them online direct from the manufacturer and you can usually choose your operating system on the manufacturers website :nice:

The thing with that is, you start to pay a premium for changing some of the options. The base price is usually pretty fair but they grossly overcharge for upgrading some components. I was going to get mine that way but when I customized it to the way I wanted, it was way too damn expensive and I was trying to be reasonable.

i didnt say 3 years old!!! i said my laptop is 3 TIMES better than my desktop
I know what you said but it gives me the impression you are comparing oranges to apples, how old is your desk top and how much did just the tower cost? How old is your laptop and how much did that cost?

It just depends i guess, for my desktop there was a lot of specials and free upgrades through HP, like free Ram upgrade, free HD upgrade, Free processor upgrade etc... so it helped out on the cost, i also priced out each part to build the rig myself and it came out to cost the same. Not saying it will always cost the same, just if you catch some deals it could totally be worth it.

i find laptops are alot better. also cheaper. my laptop is nearly 3 times better than the family desktop and was half the price :nice:

All depends on processor and ram. You cant really say that laptops are better, my desktop which is my main rig is 10 years old and sometimes i find it the same if not in some ways better than my laptop. And it was alot cheaper to upgrade ram and processor on it than when i bought the laptop.

Don't go for the M1330 XPS, I have that and its just died on me after a year... Also feels cheaply made and the screen is no where near as good as some of the other modern day ones...

Had a few sonys before and they were decent, might get another one next!

Tehcy this was aimed at you, just in case you missed it :D

Thanks techy, that sounds pretty good, 1 question though: Will i be able to change how much space i allocate to either partition with simple point and click at any time i like or would i have to redo the whole thing over? Like say the Vista partition is low on space and the XP side has loads, can i change the allocations without messing anything up?

I'm not totally sure. There may be some partitioning tools that can do it but I typically don't **** with partitions. I prefer to use multiple drives but I'm pretty sure your laptop doesn't have an extra HDD bay. You may wanna just partition it and keep a 2.5" External HDD handy.

the desktop cost £1500
Evesham computer (now banktupt)
2ghz processor
2gb ram
256Gfx card (Ati i think)
250GB hard drive
XP professional
and that was brought about 4-5 years ago but

my laptop £670
Dell vostro
2ghz dual core processor
4Gb RAM
256 Gfx card (top of the range Nvidia card)
150GB hard drive
Vista ultimate
that was brought just over a year ago.
yeah that is a big time difference but for the price of the laptop and the spec you must see where im coming from. i think that my dad did get completely ripped off for that desktop

for partioning...yes you can do it without reformatting...the trick is in how you do it...the simplist way possible is to get a linux live cd and re-partion through that...its graphical and simple...and once its partioned just stop the install process there and you have reallocated the space like you wanted.

to the person looking at a 710 with 9200m mobile card, DO NOT use that for CAD. if you want to be able to render with cad you need to get a card that has CUDA processors, they are the mobile quadro cards, they are a little more expensive...but will save you sooooo much time. They are made specifically for that and come with upto 128 CORES, not pipelines, actual CORES on the mobile card. look at the Lenovo W series to see what i mean.

To those who know there stuff;
What do you think of this Spec?

Usage:-
Multitasking
AutoCad
Bluray content

You thinking of running a 64 bit operating system bon? If not then there is 4 gig ram is the max you will need, other than that, the spec is similar to what my friend has now and is good.

know alot about computers but not as much about laptops, my instinct would be to stay away from dell though as i've seen too many dell laptops go wrong

ah my bad, it was on the first page when i lokoed so thought i'd comment, didnt see the sdate
