Hey Guys...

Just after getting my car finally up and running at 238bhp N/A my gearbox decided to give up the ghost...

It looks like my internal selector has failed and also the LSD has collapsed cracking the outer casing..

Therefore I am left no other option that to buy a second hand unit, however I am going to be upgrading my next box with M Factory 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th Gears.. Also a Cusco Diff..

Would it be possible for me to fit this into a b16a2 box ??? As the price of b16b boxes second hand are scary !! £660 !!!

Cheers - Andy

I would go for a s80 (Ne3) 4.78 gearbox out of a JDM 98 spec teg mate as it's a better suited box for the 1.8 motor your now running and they go for the same money as a ek9 S4C gearbox ,i would'nt go for a 1.6 vti box as they are'nt as strong as a ek9 or teg gearboxes ,as the teg and ek9 boxes have race bearings and dual syncrhos

The ratio's on the ek4 and ek9/96 spec teg are identical so the m factory gears will fit no probs in either

Our longer 1st gear will fit the EK4/EK9/DC2 '96 box, but it will not fit the '98 Spec box due to it using a different size 1st gear.

Although the '98 Spec box has a 4.785 Final Drive, 1st/2nd/3rd gear are the same ratio as the EK4/EK9/'96 box, with a longer 4th/5th from the GSR box. This allows the '98 Spec to achieve the same top speeds in 4th/5th as the EK4/EK9/'96 box even though it has the 4.785 Final Drive.

A long talked about subject by high-profile Japanese Engineering companies such as OS Giken and JUN is the power handling capability of the oem B-Series gearbox and it's durability during sustained high-load conditions. The general consensus here is that the B-Series box and clutch is at it's upper limit around the 250ps mark.

An EK4 box with our 1st/3rd/4th/5th and Cusco Diff would be far far better in every aspect than the '98 Spec box (other than achievable top speed of course), not to mention the higher durability (especially if you ever decide to go for higher power).

Even if you didn't opt for our close ratio gears, an EK4 box with our 4.785 Final Drive and the Cusco Diff would still be better than the '98 Spec box i.e You would have the same acceleration through 1st/2nd/3rd as the '98 Spec box, but would also have better acceleration through 4th/5th. Not to mention the upgraded LSD. Of course though, you would still be near the limit of durability with this though.

So, is the '98 Spec box worth the asking price? Well, it depends on what price you can get one for. As good as the '98 Spec box is in standard form, you can get better for cheaper.

Just some food for thought :)

A good low millage 98 spec teg box will change hands in the uk for around £600

i dunno M, i think its a lot higher than that, i say an easy 400whp the stock box should hold, i am referring to the type r boxes though, many many many people here in usa have 350-450whp honda's they drag race, they get launched on bias ply slicks and the stock type r box holds just fine. or are you referring to its limit with sustained use like in a road racing situation?

Yup, drag racing causes a high amount of initial shock-load (and also during gear changes), but this only lasts for 10-12secs, so is not really sustained. If only for drag racing, upto around the 450-500ish whp mark tends to be fine for a while (if you're one of the lucky ones! lol). If used also at the same time as a DD at this power level though, expect to be replacing gears sometime in the not too distant future ;)

Cheers guys....

Ok so if I get an ek4 box from say a 1998 Vti I can place a Cusco Plate diff on it, M factory 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th gears it will be good on my ek9 ????

So differences in synchros etc ??? Im totaly lost when it comes to transmission !! haha

Cheers - Andy

synchros are interchangeable but I would cross reference the part numbers to be certain.

The EK4 box with your above list will be excellent on an EK9

i'm glad that you mentioned that the synchros are interchangeable between the ek9 and ek4 boxes.. are the race bearings that come in the ek9 compatible as well?? so effectively, what needs to be changed on the ek4 box to make it as strong as the ek9's. i know that the LSD/Final Drives are different sizes. can be it be rebuilt to ek9 specs?
