Hi all I've just had a little debate with the lads at work about drilled and grooved discs and how much of a waste if time they are!

What do you guys think?

yeh slotted are the best as they clean the pad perfect for track etc

I've dimpled and slotted discs on the front. I wouldn't go near the drilled ones, they're too weak

Is there proof of this reliability?
My previous expereance of grooved discs they just make more noise and chew up brake pads and warp!

Grooved just crack as I've seen of a couple of cars
drilled discs crack from the holes as I seen on a couple of high powered cars!

My oem APEC blanks done 4 track days and miles upon miles of road miles and with only just one brake pad change! And I'm not the lightest of brake pushers! Lol

The spoon discs look odd but I think I get the idea of why they made it this way:

Why's that then bud? They are odd.......
because, unlike others, you don't need a crap ton of slots. You just need, apparently, four. Spoon does ALOT of R&D and they strive to have competition based products that exceed or meet OEM Honda standards. With that in mind I'd assume these are less prone to cracking then ones with more slots. This is just my theory...

If they warp, get better grooved discs. Has nothing to do with the slots but with the metal used imho. The fact that they chew up brake pads is the same reason they make sure your pads are always clean.

Never heard of this though....

Well, (imho) if the grooves on your discs make the difference between a working brake system or too weak of a system, you need different brakes :D I think the difference between slotted or not ain't that big.

For this reason jt i am asking other peoples opinions to see if they or yourself have come across the same as me, after all what are forums like this for :)

Sounds like perfectly good theory :) I love spoon products as the quality is in my opinion the best! Made to last as are oem Honda parts but with the extra bit of function!

I run plain disk on the track as lots of other
guy. Good quality disk will last longer.

So it's up to how many time you want to bother changing rotors.

I've run 20$ cheap rotor without warping them.

I prefer to get new rotors often so my caliper piston
don't go out too far.

Plain disk also crack if they are too small...

Yes exactly, if there are more people having (heard of) cracking slotted discs I'd certainly like to hear that :)

I have Brembo Max discs (slotted) with DS2500 pads and haven't had the problem though. Which of course doesn't mean it can't happen at all.

It's more that I came across them (discs and pads) for a great price that I decided to buy them but I wouldn't pay more than 10 quid extra for slotted :p

Never liked driled and groved discs or ebc! (soz hope no one falls out with me) that was what was on my ek when i got it and hate them my vans better lol. always used tarox g88 discs and rally pads or pagid rs14 pads on my old valver corsa and 400hp sti as i live in east kilbride is full of roundabouts need good brakes. Flat mate uses preformance friction floating discs and eather carbotech xp8s or 10s on his 8mr and they for a heaver car is the best ive found. but every one has own persnal oppinions and driving styles:drive::ek9:

If the drilled discs are forged with the holes in them, then they shouldnt crack, they crack because they are drilled after the disc has been made, which causes a weakness. I havent changed the brakes yet, but I will do because i do think that they are underpowered for the performance of the car.

drilled and grooved discs will always go through pads faster then standard plain discs. the idea is that the holes in the discs improve cooling keeping friction as temperature increases friction decreases, and the grooves increase friction. keeping the slots and holes symmetric is key to avoid cracking as all forces will be balanced. un-symmetric slot/holes/grooves lead to imbalances and derivatives in forces exerted on the disc

The grooves or "slots" are there also to evacuate gases, pad dust, and heat created by the pad to rotor friction.

slots or grooves are not so much intended to remove heat. thats the job of the drilled holes. slots dont draw air through the entire disc, only the surface, holes will. slots are primarily there for friction and dust removal as u said
