Choose a car for less than £1k to travel the world

Hello everyone,

Right, basically I'm thinking of travelling from the UK to somewhere in Asia, by car to raise money for charity. The idea would be to do this on a tight budget because 1) I won't have thousands to spend on the car, when you factor in costs of fuel, food etc. and 2) Well it would almost too easy if you did it in a brand new car with 0 mileage and that's half the fun gone!

So if you had let's say £1k to spend on a car to travel 10k miles or so in just under a month, what would you choose? It should be reliable (obviously), fuel efficient, comfortable enough to spend a few nights sleeping in, large enough to carry stuff in and preferably just a little bit fun too :p

I already own it. She goes well off road...

Hahaha I've got an MX5 actually, paid £400 for it and I would be tempted to do it in it, just not sure I'd be able to bear the aches and pains after sleeping in it!

I like the idea of a Hilux but can't imagine they're too fuel efficient?

So that leaves £599 for a fancy tent - or B&Bs. Can't imagine a better car for the job, honestly.

Re: Passat - while I don't doubt it's suitability for the job, I can't imagine a car that is less fun. I would rather drive a Fiat Multipla.

MX5 FTW.

Pros:
Bog standard, you know it will make it.
If it does ever break down, parts are never far away.
It can run on the shittest fuel anywhere in the world.
Chicks dig it:

Cons:
Sunburn.
Rear tyres don't last long.
Your face will crack from smiling so much.

Bought my crx for £390! Never missed a beat, and does 59mpg on a run.

Imo an Mb6 clearly fits like all the criteria you mentioned.

F**ck spending more than 1 night in am mx5 lol

Old Volvo for the comical bumpability. Id love to do a road trip in one. Would be a right laugh and theres plenty of room to sleep!

Daihatsu yrv best runaround ever, very roomy and rear seats recline and fold dwn so it's like a van and they have the Toyota 1.3 engine :) also pretty fun to drive basically a cheap jazz
