At WOT on a dyno run it'll undoubtedly be running pretty high VE throughout the revs, though I'm still surprised it needed timing pulling as I would expect VE to be lower than on the VTEC lobe. Perhaps the lower VE is offset by a higher DCR at low RPM vs a higher VE and lower DCR on VTEC? Bit like the difference between an NA and FI engine scaled down? Perhaps the knock at higher RPM isn't as detectable? Interesting stuff...
I am surprised that you can get 95 to work well with such a high compression, slightly under cammed engine. When you say timing was pulled, pulled from what figure? I'd be very interested to compare the maps between that and a standard engine mapped for 99, but I don't expect you to share those.
