Okay, basically I've just bought a 1997 Honda Civic 1.4i Tornado. It's totally standard apart from a pair of coilovers.

And what I was wondering is, is there any way of getting an average as to what it's sitting at now? According to a few different sources it started life with 89 raging Japanese horses. It's sitting at 150,000 and from what I can see of the service history and MOT certs it's been fairly well kept. It was a mechanic who owned it (apparently) before the guy I bought it from, and the MOT certificates seem to reflect that but it still must have lost a fair bit, anyone any ideas? :))

Oh, And I know I could get it on a dyno but I was just wondering just now.

not necessarily, if it has been serviced regularly, well maintained and driven Conservatively i
see no reason that it would be down in power.
it doesn't really matter anyway, does it?
a few bhp here and there isn't going to be noticeable.

whatever horses you lose in a honda over the years you can get back by driving the **** out of it for a few weeks

You will lose power over time FACT as piston rings wear and cylinder bores distort you slowly loose the ability to build compression and create a decent vacuum. You won't get it back by thrashing the crap out of it, you'll just speed the process up. Its not something i'd be worried about though, specially in a 1.4 lol.

don't be bothered about it mate. but most people who fling a couple of mods on an ej9 and dyno it always seem to have over 100bhp? don't know how that happens my self but.

that depends on the dyno.

A lot of it comes down to how the engine was run in from new i think.

Fair enough, thanks guys. I'll just need to find a few nice cheap mods to perk it up a bit. Haha.

save your money and save for a type r...why worry about horses in a 1.4? built to be a daily.

This i had a wee laugh to myself. It's like 78bhp or something book power. Worry about stuff like that when its making big power. If your worrying about power in a 1.4 got to halfords there max power air filters give you 100bhp

im not trying to be stupid or horrible, just make it look nice and have a laugh, looking for power in a 1.4 is so pointless, the money ull spend making it as quick as a b16 b you could probably just buy a b16b

Hilarious lad that you are, huh? :)

The point lads was just to have a bit of fun and give myself a little bit of familiarity with the Civic engine as I know very little about the inner workings. And I thought, while I'm learning I might as well do a few minor mods, it was never my intention to spend thousands on it. And really, a comment like the one above is just a bit sarcy really, isn't the point in this forum for everyone to discuss their love of all Civics? Not just the big-power ones, everyone needs to start somewhere.
