How do you find the gear change from 3rd to 4th. Its quite a jump compared to the 4.4 final drive stock B16A2 box. How do you find the 1st 2nd 3rd compared to stock does it really acclerate that much quicker??

My options at present are

Keep my B16A2 box and fit Mfactory 4.785 Final Drive Cheapest but not strongest. Its got 75k on it.

Get a EK9 or 96 spec Teg box same final drive but stronger and with LSD

Or get the S80 98 spec then i've got the 4.785 final drive, Strength and LSD BUT big jump between 3rd to 4th.

Whilst this is changed fit a Stage 1 Exedy clutch and Exedy 4.3kg flywheel.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks Ian

Whichever box you decide on I wouldnt worry about the mileage, as If you change FD or ratios etc you should basically rebuild as much as you can afford to, so as it would be 'like new'. If you intend on trackwork - a big YES I think! Then an LSD is essential, wether it be oem or preferably aftermarket. Cant comment on the gap between gears but the Tegs I meet on track go alreet :nice:

Oh and I think everybody knows my opinions on the Exedy stg1 by now :p

I don't. Is there something i should know about them?? won't be able to afford a build. The idea of buying a type r box is to get the lsd and have a stronger more reliable box than the vti.

Some judder some dont, have a search through some posts in this section. Welcome to sample the judder in mine, if you are unlucky you will be tearing your hair out, its without a doubt the worst thing I have done to the car.

Fair point on the build, but at 80-100k ISH (depending on use!), you will probably need to pull the box apart for something, whatever you can replace now will save you money later, bearings/shims etc or even selector fork or synchros. Bear this in mind when you buy a used box. I am no expert..this is based on my own gearbox adventures!

The Type-R boxes aren't any much stronger than your B16A box. Just make sure when you install the final drive that you "refresh" it with new bearings etc

You are driving a street car, not a full out race car (and even then, there's not much difference). Your B16A box with 4.785 final drive will out-accelerate the Type-R boxes due to the shorter gearing. The only advantage they have is the oem LSD, but there is nothing stopping you from adding in an aftermarket LSD to your B16A box.

Don't pay a premium for a new box, when your existing box is more than adequate for the job.

I've just had an s80 box fitted to my car. I was in a similar situation as you decideing what to do but a rebuild was out of question too expensive :nono: i choose the teg 98 box over th 96 spec or ek9 box and also fitted an exedy stage 1 clutch at the same time and i think that it's fine pulls really well through the gears hope this helps..

im in a similar situation, feels like a synchro may have died in my s4c box that or it has NO fluid in it :p

so im contemplating buying an s80 for the lsd and for the fact my box may die soon

any ideas?

Buying another tranny doesn't guarantee you won't have problems with it (unless it is new or has just been rebuilt).

I would keep your existing transmission, refresh any components that need refreshed and install an aftermarket LSD.

This will run smoother and better than any used S80 transmission.

not thinking about the 4.928 final drive man?
