well was on my way home from work sitting in the fast lane doing about 71 - 75 and noticed a police car behind me the road is a 70 mph road the police didn't pull me over thought he might have tryed to pull me over for my exhaust aswell. Can i be done for speeding while the police car is behind me or would they have just pulled me over ?? there was only one police officer in the car and he was driving probly just me panicing but nice to be put at ease thanks everyone

He would have pulled you over.
You can sleep easy now :p

You should be fine. I had an undercover follow me doing arround 85-90 once and he flashed me i moved over to stop and he just carried on.

They need to pull you over to issue a ticket, and you'd have to be bloody unlucky to get tugged at less than 80mph on the motorway.

They can measure your speed whilst they are moving too using a more complicated version of the stationary gun. But if you didn't get pulled or anything then I would imagine you're fine.

In Scotland there would have to be 2 Officers,

The officer would have be behind you for a certain time and Traffic trained to prosecute. Normal trained bobbies arent trained to do you for speeding just by following and calculating the speed from the speedo as they are not accurate enough. The traffic cars are %100 spot on.

71-75 mph in a 70 is unlikely to result in a ticket, 79+ is.

sounds good to me then it was on a dual carriage way plus he had a bmw cut him up and he didn't pull him over ether panic over now haha

i was once a passenger in my friends car and we were going about 90 on the motorway, next minute a police car was behind us with flashing lights so we moved into the middle lane and the police just sped off - lucky but he must have had something more important to deal with.

Seems like police across seas are more lenient than here in the states. I know here in oklahoma, police will pull over anyone going 3 mph over and blow it out of proportion and say you was going 10 over. Ridiculousness.

I was always told that it has to be 10% over the speed limit before they can pull you, if thats correct then you would be fine
and as said you would have to be super unlucky to be pulled on the motor way for doing less then 80mph or have done something else to piss them off

A friends dad is a retired senior traffic cop and he said they always went on a 10% + @mph threshold and you're over that they were within their right to pull you.

Think its to do with the law needing to be fair and they accept that pretty much 100% of cars are made with innaccurate speedos and it would be unfair to pull people under this - and thats if they can be arsed anyway

i wouldnt be worrying at all lad, the general rule here in ireland and prob in the uk is, if you are getting pulled over then there has to be two coppers in the car, the second one is used as a witness in case it went to court and said you werent speeding, then the other one is the witness to say yes you were, so all clear, nothing to worry about..:ek9:

normally its 10% + 2 mph so you could get to 79mph on the motorway and your ok

10% + 1 or 2 if ur lucky mate

thats what you add to any speed limit before you can be prosecuted for the offence. 30mph limit is actually 34mph if you are 33mph there is nothing they can do at all mate. and that would even stand up in court...
its calculated through driver error which is the +1 and the 10% is for speedo error...

TBH you would be more likely to get pulled over for doing 55MPH in a 70MPH limit...
I've been pulled over before late at night on the bypass and i was doing 90MPH the police officer ( Officer as they are not men or human lol) and he stated he knew i was doing 90MPH but i was driving carefully and wasn't changing lanes and there wasn't much traffic. he just gave me a tlak saying how its not me he is worried about its someone else who is not as aware of their driving that makes its dangerous. so basically he let me go after he had a chat with me, which TBH made me respect him as i know i was doing nothing wrong and so did he, but you cannot account for every eventuality on the road so be careful .

If you were doing an indicated 71-75 on your clock, your real speed would have been below 70, so you will be ok.
