My every day car (Acura CL-S) is starting to develop gearbox problems and that coupled with the leaking PS is going to cost $2500 to fix, I am thinking maybe its better to just get something else and have had my eye on the Subaru WRX 2001-2005 models. The STI is too expensive so that is out of the question.

Basically i am looking for a lightly modded Wagon WRX, any opinions on this, are they good cars? Reliable comfortable etc??? This will be my everyday car. I have very limited info so if anybody owned one please chime in, what did you like or hate about the car?

I actually got a 2002 impreza wrx wagon:nice:

Well, how do you like it? How is the quality, comfort, reliability, fuel economy?

the car is very confortable, but not too much for long trip like 3-4 hours of driving, rear seat are very confortable and dash material are really good, in the trunk there is a lot of space, and there is a big place for the spare tire with lot of tools, the engine is very powerful, even when the car is fully loaded it pulls like a train, but from 750 rpm to 2000 you have got a little turbo lag... brakes are very good, front are 4 pots and in the rear are 2 pots with hand brake dedicated drums...traction is very good in every situation, like sand, snow, exc... for fuel economy is not that good, 7-8 kilometers per litre in the city with a lot of traffic, and like 13-14 in non urban road with no traffic and costant speed... the handling is very good thanks to the awd system and the large size tyre (mine are 215 45 r17 with "pirelli pzero nero")...the wrx is very fast... 218 horsepower and like 300 N/m.... redline is over 7500 rpm!:D mine is stock except an OMP front upper bar that is amazing... i hope this will help you...:nice:

anyway if you want pics i can take a shoot of any particular on mine...

If you're fed up with gearbox problems on your current DD, you DO NOT want to get a WRX, especially if you are planning on making more than stock power and do some spirited driving/launching now and again.

Believe me when I say this, us Honda guys have it extremely lucky ;)

What market WRX do you have? In USA only STI model has 4pot brakes, thank you for the information though :nice:

Well i know the owner of this one and it was cared for very well, has bout 150,000 miles on it :nerv: but has some nice mods like TEIN SS, Cobb,16g turbo etc... I am not into drag so i would never launch it, just drive to work and back, and an occasional spirited drive through the canyons.

The car is currently making 260whp and has been for a while now, i would leave it as is since it would be my every day car, steph do you still think the gearbox is a deal breaker? :nerv: Anyway to upgrade this sans getting an STI box?

i've got an european version, with stock 17 wheels and sport seat, in europe wrx has front 4 pot and rear 2 pot, Sti has front brembo 4 pot and rear brembo 2 pot...!

Well, it's kind of like sitting on a ticking time bomb. Some are lucky, some are not. And with 260whp/16g, that's kind of upper limit territory (visit North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club), regardless of driving on the street, auto-x or drag.

The cheapest real upgrade is available at MFactory Competition Products - Forged Transmission Components ;) The most expensive (and capable of handling the most abuse) upgrade would be a 6spd conversion.

they are ten a penny here in ireland and are known to give a bit of trouble, personally i wouldnt touch one with that mileage on it big end bearings give trouble a friend has one and hes on his 3rd engine but he does drive hard although hes never tracked it or anything.id go for its direct rival the evo.also known for transmission trouble but hardier engines!!

my dad has a 1995 model ra sti limited edition version. its a sprint car hes never had any problems with it apart from getting it set up properly, quick car only thing is over here in n.ireland there everywere.

Thanks again P4X once again it seems America gets shafted on the cars lol.

Thank you everyone, its a tough choice now as my Acura CL-S was the same some people had no trouble many had a lot of trouble with it... This sucks, why do car companies make a great car with a crappy trans :(

I had a subaru wrx sti version 3, it was running 362bhp and 310lb some good power. Had the car for a year it came imported with this spec and never had any problems with it. I did drive the car hard off the line would do 150mph think I had a good one. Mileage on it was 84,000 miles so no spring chicken.

I had a wrx sti wagon version3 555 v ltd, had it for around 8months as i was sick to death off putting petrol in it. Was getting around 18miles a gallon as it had the close ratio rally gearbox in it. Was extremly quick but couldn't get past 120mph due to the gearbox.

As far as speed goes the scooby was great, but there dire inside. And the body work is pretty cheapily made, easily dented.

Scooby or EK9???

9 any day :drive:

Oh and version 3's are prone to oil leaking from the rocker cover on to the exhaust and giving off a terrible smell, nothing major though :nice:
