My b18c has been smoking abit lately and want to get it sorted. I need some help to identify what it is causing the car to smoke how it is.
I went on a rolling road day and had the car filmed from the rear so here you can see where it smokes and how much.
You can't see it so much in the video but have noticed in the mirrors it's smokes in Vtec but only everyone and then, it tends to smoke on over run which you can see in the video.

Any ideas will be great, I'd like to get it done in one so will probably change anything that could make it smoke and use oil just to get it sorted in one hit.
Thanks

Smoke looks blue to me mate which means oil

My B18C did the exact same and it was a valve stem seal

Okay thanks. I was leaning towards it being stem seals but want to make sure.
When I recently took my manifold off to fit a baffled sump there was oil leaking down the exhaust ports.

Same as mine mate

I had oil down me exhaust valve stems but only on one cylinder.
It only takes a little bit of oil to make a lot of smoke

Mine smokes a fair bit but guessing this is because its running down all 4 ports then.
If I rev the engine up when there is something behind the car such as a wall it leaves a patch of oil so I must be running down the manifold and getting pushed out the back of the exhaust. Is there a safe way to clean the inside of an exhaust out? Id imagine its quote coked up with oil from the amount that dose come out, or willit just burn off as I'm driving it after doing my stem seals?

Once I had done mine it stopped smoking

If i were you I would just let it burn off naturally

Okay ill take a look into getting my stem seals sorted then.
Is there anything else I could get sorted now thats worth while when there being changed?
Valve guides etc..

Its just up to you how far you want to go.

I had my head skimmed and valve seats recut while it was off.

Biggest issue here is the exhaust valves themselves which are usually the original culprit.

Excessive valve end float will wear the guide , valve seat and seal aswell , so keep in mind to budget for valves , guides , seals ... also machining , valve seat cut , guides to be fitted.

That is worse case scenario , so just make sure that whoever does the work diagnoses the problem properly and checks the above

What he said! :win:

Stems seals did absolutely nothing for mine, i had 3mm of valve end play on exhaust side.

Also the oil rings could be the culprit causing this issue couldn't they? Or is this when smoking under heavy throttle the rings are worn?

It dose smoke on heavy throttle, not so much as you can't see it in the video but I have noticed it in my mirrors and mates have told me. It's when Vtec comes in it starts to smoke..

I thought this, but if you have that much valve play when you are in vtec the valves are out further than normal thus bringing oil with it. Mine also smoked during Vtec but didn't apear to at other times.

Definitely go with the head first.

Okay nice one for all the info. Ill contact a local engineering place that dose engine work.
Will they know to check everything that's been mentioned in this thread or should I be telling them what I'd like checked? Guides, valve seats etc..

From my experience with this, do the valves and guides whilst she is apart. If you need valves the machine shop can advice if required.

Probably worth changing the rings too, whilst apart. Check the bores aren't worn or scratched or you'll need a .5mm rebore to go with it too.

Would I have to get new pistons or anything else if it was to be rebored?
