Hi Folks!, i think the title pretty much resumes my question, i´ve been searching for information about the Honda Type R Helical LSD and how it works, and i didn´t find anything anywhere... does anyone knows or has any information about it? and of course How to test it?.

Thanks in advance.

Helical LSDs, like Quaife ATB or Torsen are geared rather than clutch type. Just do a Google search for "helical limited slip differential", there's loads of info out there about how they work and differ to a clutch type.

IIRC, you can put the car up on jackstands and put the car in 4th gear and rotate one of the wheels. If the other wheels rotates in the opposite direction - you have an LSD.

Of course, the best way to see is removing an axle and shining a light through the hole. If you see a small bar in the middle - you DO NOT have an LSD.

If you see nothing but a flat surface - the "face" of the other axle, you have an LSD.

Sorry to bring ths thread alive, but i have a question.
When i got my car, it was supposed to have the LSD (its a ek4 converted to a ek9). The thing is that the stamp on the box was all faded, so i never got to see if it has the lsd.
So now, on saturday, while installing my spoon calipers, spinned the right side wheel forward and the left did the same (i had read before that if the car had lsd the other wheel should turn the other side). After that i started to worry, and just read this.
As i did in neutral, should i do this on 4th grear as atated above or on any gear?
How can i confirm I have LSD without getting the axles off?

Thanks, hope someone can clarify this to me. Im investing in the car, and hpe i dont have a surprise on this.

ek4 has diferent kind of lsd than the ek9 ,its normal dont worry.

JDM ek4 has lsd i know lot of plp with jdm ek4 all the same like your case when they spin the one whell the other goes as well.

you should be able to tell just from driving it, what happens if you nail the throttle mid corner does your car pull you round the bend (LSD) or just try to go straight on (NO LSD)?

This may seem like a silly suggestion, perhaps try driving the thing like it's supposed to be driven. An LSD will become apparent pretty quickly.

Currenly im brakingthe motor in, so im not gonna be able.
Any other way, perhaps a little more technical?

if your not able to drive it hard go with the wheel off etc and looking at the axle or spinning the wheel etc.or both :)

but when you use it you will def feel it..makes hell of a difference.

hehehe.
No i cant drive it hard and i note a difference between this and my ek4, but i just want to make sure.
Dont want to take the axle off (im not a mechabic wise guy, and dont wanna screw anything)
That was why i was asking exactly how ti do the wheel spinning test.
As i told before, i did this in neutral and both spinned the same, and i thought that one should spin the other way. BUT i want to be sure if i had to tho this in 1, 2,3 or 4th gear, or what......

Thanks

put it in fourth gear, you may have to use a breaker bar to turn the wheels though. Tell us what you see... ;)

And what's in the new motor that you can't drive on it hard right away?

I got it in stands today, engaged it on 4th gear, turned one wheels forward and..... voila!!!!, the other side wheel turned the other way!!!! so now i can sleep well knowing by worries were unfounded.
So now i know ive got LSD.

About your question raging angel, ive just replaced rings, valve seals, and exhaust valve guides, so im driving the car easy for 1000km thats all.
Also i finally installed my spoon cams and replaced my NGK wires for a set of nology wires.
Ive bought a aem ems that im gona get tuned as soon as i finish braking up the motor.

Other changes on the last month have been, mugen MF10`s in 16" with 218/45 falken azenis 615, spoon twinbolck calipers, oem white foglights, installed a new mugen lip, CF spoon (style) mirrors. Im gonna install an engine torque damper, and waiting for a mugen twin loop to arrive.

Thanks for th help and solving my problem with identifying the LSD.
