alrite boys, im having a problem with the vtec in my civic type r, bought just 3 weeks ago and it doesnt seem to be givin out the power it should be, the vtec should have a lot more pull, it has a vtec controller and im thinkin it has something to do with that? oil level are perfect and plugs are ok, needs a new airfilter but i dont think thats the problem...any ideas?? once it gets goin its ok but there should be a lot more pull....

Sounds like your VTEC system is working but your power levels are off, that about right? What RPM do you have that VTEC controller set to engage at? Do not set VTEC lower than factory spec on stock motor. Consider performing an engine compression check across the cylinders see how compression is holding up. Are you using the correct octane rating? Get that air filter replaced as a restrictive piece can reek havoc for a performance engine. Lastly, any CEL's?

Replace the airfilter and remove the vtec controller then see..

Ya dat sounds about right, the vtec is working but it doesnt seem to b given the type r kick when the vtec comes in, its set at 5,500 i tink..the sound is there but no real pull..could it b an ecu prob? A friend of mine is a honda mechanic and he says it could b anything, could b down to oil pressure aswell, wat do u b mean by CEL's??

I think you will find the OEM Honda setting for VTEC is about 6k rpm (or 6100).
Dunx

CEL, the engine check light that would light up if the ecu found a problem. Turn the vtec point up to some where between 6k-6200rpm and you will get a better kick when vtec engages. I have seen dyno sheets where the vtec point was set lower and there was a dip in power so is probably what your experiencing.

well no theres no engine management light showing up on the dash anyway, is it an expensive job to get the controller taken out and to get the vtec set back to its original 6000rpm??

look in the passenger footwell, underneath the glove box and to the left there is a cover that your flare holder is on,remove this cover (your ecu is behind the cover) the vtec controller will have a harness thats connected to your loom and your ecu, just unplug it and plug your ecu into the loom.
its simple, you'll see what i mean when you remove the cover.

I just had a look but theres 2 many connections and dunno wat to disconnect, wat does the loom look like, dnt wana be disconnecting the wrong one..
