What engine should I buy?

It is almost that time of the year again. That time of the year when I have saved enough money from my deployments to the war in Afghanistan, and think about getting a new engine.
I currently have a D16Y7 in my Civic, and it is ready to die. The car had a front end collision (from previous owner) and ever since then the engine was over heating, so I put a new cylinder head in. The engine still heats up now, just not as fast. I could go maybe 50-100 miles before I have to stop due to the heat. After all I dont want to blow the engine. This leads me to believe that the block is either warped or cracked. Either way its time for a new engine.



My current budget is from $500-$2000USD which leaves me a couple of choices.
  1. Buy another D16Y7 or Y8 (VTEC). Also cant find one for under $1000USD!
  2. Buy a B15A1 for about $1000-$2000. Thought I saw one for cheaper on EBay? Oh well...
  3. Drive around the D16Y7 till it blows, save up my money for about 3 months, buy a slightly used B18C.
I will put it up on a pole for people to vote on. All opinions are welcome. So the question is, given the parameters, what would you do :confused:

i would recommend you the B18 as its the punchier of the all 3.... tho value for money wise, the B16A is a good engine too!

money talks!! so if you can afford the 3rd option go for it...
 
well it depends on how much power you really want in the end and if your going to stay NA or not. GSR engines can be found for $3000 complete swap with LSD sometimes, if you can install it yourself your good to go! i say B series or NOTHING!

you guys are gonna make me broke!

I eventually plan on going turbo, but dont plan to until sometime 2009! the power i want to get is about 500 whp @ about 2 bar. That EK9 vs Godzilla video a saw a while back really inspired me. I kind of had my heart set on a 2000 B18C (200 hp??) but those things aren't cheap. Spoon is willing to part with a rebuilt B18C for $5000. Thinking about gettng that one.

Here is my other argument, I could spend on a B16A1 and hook up my suspension for the cost on 1 B18C. I would, at a later date (2010) get a B18C and turbo it up. what do you think?
 
B16a+ suspension :nice: drop your power goal to 400whp and it can be easily atainged with a B16a with just pistons and rods!! if your turbocharging the motor DO NOT buy one from spoon, just go with the B16a its one of my favorite motor for turbocharging!!
 
since you want to go turbo, I'll go for the B16A

RVM and Blinx why is that???
I have seen (on Los Angeles freeways of course) B16A turbo get smoked by K20A NA! (probably due to inexperience of driver, bad tune, and other factors)
In order to stay competitive, dont i need a 1.8L???
But I know what u mean Blinx, for a track or touge i would probably only need 300-400whp. But for a drag (if i am ever tested :drive:) wouldn't i need about 500whp???

all turbo b16 are not the same, my friend had turbo 1.9 honda civic, he never ran faster than 15.5 seconds in 1/4 mile :shocked: and he had 300bhp!! reason is his car was VERY heavy, with driver it weighted 3080lbs!! he had no LSD, crap tires, and very bad suspension, he got beat all the time by NA cars lol.

anyhow i like the b16a for a few reasons, its cheaper, it has a bit less torque which helps with traction but it will make the same HP as a 1.8, dont forget the turbo makes the power so you don't have to worry too much about engine size like NA cars do. I also like shorter stroke of B16a for reliability reasons can be revved to 9000rpm all day just like b16b as long as you add valve springs and retainers.

and just to be clear Bucc-i you know i have a 1.6 right? i make 333whp and 260tq at only 12psi and thats using crappy US 91octane fuel!!

1.8 is nice too but cost is too high in my opinion.

as far as the NATO troops, no believe it or not
but as for the Afghan insurgents, they commit war crimes all the time.
war crimes are very rare here.
